Getting Started: Helpful Hints to Understanding

the Financial Aid and Scholarship Process

What is Cost of Attendance (COA)? Cost of attendance is the full estimated cost of completing a full year, as a full-timestudent, at Jewell. The COA typically includes: Tuition and fees,books and supplies, room and board, personal expenses, and costof transportation.

What are Scholarships? Scholarships are a form of institutionalaid provided by Jewell to help you further your education and donot require repayment. Scholarships are awarded on various criteria, including academic standing, talent, and co-curricular activities.

What are Institutional Funds/Grants? Institutional fundsinclude a variety of types of gift aid and are awarded based onfinancial need, academic standing, and talent. Institutional fundsdo not require repayment and decrease your family’s out-of-pocket expenses toward paying for college.

What is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA)? The FAFSA is a form that can be prepared annuallyby prospective and current college students in the United Stateswho are US Citizens or permanent residents. The form is used todetermine your eligibility for state and federal financial aidincluding the Federal Pell Grant; Federal Unsubsidized andSubsidized Loans; and Federal/State Work-study programs. Inaddition, the FAFSA determines your Expected FamilyContribution (EFC).

What is Expected Family Contribution (EFC)? ExpectedFamily Contribution is a measure of your family’s financialstrength and is calculated according to a formula establishedthrough the filing of the FAFSA. Your EFC determines certaintypes and amounts of aid for which you will qualify. In addition,the college will use the EFC to determine your eligibility for allsources of financial assistance.

What are Federal and State Funds? Federal and State Fundsare a combination of grants, loans, and work-study that help youand your family afford college. Filing of the Free Application forFederal Student Aid determines the type of aid you will be awardedand your responsibility for repayment.

Everyone!Many families mistakenly think they don't

qualify for aid and prevent themselves from

receiving financial aid by failing to apply for

it. In addition, there are a few sources of aid

such as the Federal Unsubsidized Direct

Loan and the PLUS (Parent) Loan program

that are available regardless of need.

Federal Loans =

Aid in the form of Federalloans (Student and/orParent) is determined bysubmission of the FAFSAand the determination ofyour Expected FamilyContribution (EFC).

Work-study =

Through the completion ofthe FAFSA, students mayqualify to participate in theFederal Work-studyProgram. Work-study is nota grant (you must work toearn it), and it is not a loan(you don't have to repay it).It is an opportunity to holdan eligible campus job.

Additional campus employment can be foundthrough the college’sStudent Workers program.

Scholarships =

Students are awarded academic, talent, and/or co-curricular scholarshipsbased on specific academic,co-curricular, or talent qualifications. Scholarshipsdo not have to be repaidand directly reduce howmuch your family must payto the college.

Jewell works individually with families to create a comprehensive financial aid package that mayinclude scholarships, institutional/federal/state grants, federal loans, and/or federal work-study.

Payment Plan: Jewell offers an interest-free Tuition Payment Plan for families to spread the out-of-pocketexpenses for tuition, fees, room and board over 4-payments throughout the semester. The first payment is dueAugust 1. Final payment for the fall semester is due November 1 and final payment for the spring semester is dueApril 1.

William Jewell College Academic Scholarships

William Jewell College awards academic scholarships for first-year and transfer students upon the completion of theWilliam Jewell Application for Admission and admittance to the college. Academic Scholarships are awarded based onyour academic achievement, standardized test scores (if applicable), and extra-curricular involvement.

Presidential Scholarship $11,000 - $14,000

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to all students who demonstrate academic excellence. Submission of the William Jewell College Application forAdmission automatically grants eligibility to receive the Presidential Scholarship award.

Minimum Requirements May Include:• Completed William Jewell College Admission Application • 23 ACT or 1070 SAT (CR+M)• High school GPA of 3.0 (sixth-semester) • Rank in top 30% of class

Jewell Scholarship $15,000, $17,000, or Full Tuition(Replaces previously awarded Presidential Scholarship)

The Jewell Scholarship is William Jewell College’s top academic scholarship. Students must apply and be chosen to receive the prestigious Jewell Scholarship award.

Minimum Requirements Include:• Completed William Jewell College Admission Application • Rank in top 20% of class• Submission of William Jewell College Scholarship Application • Submission of Jewell Scholar Essay• High School GPA of 3.5 (sixth-semester) • Participation in Scholar Recognition Day (Jan. 29th, Feb. 5th or Feb. 19th)• 27 ACT or 1220 SAT (CR+M) • Comprehensive Activity, Honor, and Service Resume

Oxbridge Honors Scholarship $15,000(Replaces previously awarded Presidential or Jewell Scholarship)

The Oxbridge Honors Scholarship is awarded to all students who will participate in William Jewell’s Oxbridge Honors program. Students must apply andbe admitted to the program to be eligible to receive the award. The program typically requires a minimum 3.75 GPA, 28 ACT/1250 SAT, and class rank intop 10%.

Requirements of the Program Include:• Completed William Jewell College Admission Application • Invitation to Oxbridge Program Interview• Submission of Oxbridge Essay • Admission to the Oxbridge Honors Program

(Found on William Jewell College Admission Application)• Two Letters of Academic Recommendation

Achiever Scholarship $8,000 - $10,000

The Achiever Scholarship is awarded to all transfer students who demonstrate academic excellence. Submission of the William Jewell College Application forAdmission automatically grants eligibility to receive the Achiever Scholarship award.

Minimum Requirements May Include:• Completed William Jewell College Admission Application• Transfer GPA of 3.0 in one full-time semester (15 credit hours) of transferable coursework

Presidential Scholarship $12,000

The Presidential Scholarship is William Jewell College’s top academic scholarship for transfer students. Submission of the William Jewell College Applicationfor Admission automatically grants eligibility to receive the Presidential Scholarship award.

Minimum Requirements May Include:• Completed William Jewell College Admission Application • Transfer GPA of 3.75 in 60 hours of transferable coursework• Transferring from an accredited Community College

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship $1000

The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship honors students involved in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Minimum Requirements May Include:• Completed William Jewell College Admission Application• Phi Theta Kappa Membership in good standing at the community college most recently attended3

William Jewell College offers a variety of Talent and Co-Curricular Awards, including athletic awards. Scholarships awarded for talent or co-curricular involvement can reach up to full tuition. All Talent (excluding athletics) and co-curricular awards require submission of theScholarship Application. All require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
