Urban Davos, idyllic Klosters
Davos Klosters is one of the most famous holiday resorts in the world, and boasts the most comprehensive holiday,
sports and meeting facilities in the mountains. Although the contrast between urban Davos and idyllic Klosters could
not be greater, both villages, which lie only ten minutes drive from each other, have one thing in common: their fasci-
nating and breathtaking mountain backdrop.
DavosDavos is the highest town in Europe, famed for the diversity of its sporting, leisure and cultural facilities, rejuvenating climate,
HC Davos, the Spengler Cup, Kirchner Museum, World Economic Forum and celebrated freestyle scene on the Jakobshorn.
Davos originally grew in importance, thanks to its rejuvenating climate, for which it has been known for around 150 years. As
early as 1860, the first Davos guest house was opened to welcome spa guests. The immigrant German physician, Alexander
Spengler, opened a convalescence spa for people suffering from lung disease and primarily prescribed extensive sleep on the
sun terraces of Davos along with Veltliner wine. This treatment made Davos world-famous and in 1924, Thomas Mann immor-
talised the place in a literary sense with his novel “The Magic Mountain”. Numerous other writers, artists and philosophers
followed in Mann’s footsteps. They brought their own culture with them, made the spa town famous in their works or were
responsible for initiating the sports, events and cultural facilities that exist today.
KlostersKlosters is an alpine holiday resort of the kind you dream about: a chic chalet-style village, authentic traditions and an interna-
tional character on account of its many regular cosmopolitan visitors. It’s possibly for this reason that even royal visitors feel
at home here.
Klosters gained fame as a winter and summer holiday resort over a century ago. It experienced a decisive impetus in its de-
velopment as a stylish holiday resort for connoisseurs in the 1950s. At that time, many famous names from the American and
British film, music and theatre scene discovered the ski resort, which resulted in it gaining the name “Hollywood on the Rocks”.
Back then, many British and American guests moved to Klosters, where they established their second homes. They character-
ised the style and atmosphere of the holiday village for decades, and their children are still doing it to this day.

Madrisa repositioned as a fun and adventure mountain Claudio Zuccolini appointed brand ambassador
Some 22 million francs has been invested on the Madrisa in the summer of 2016, which is intended to safeguard this
mountain region for the long term. “The event mountain for connoisseurs in Davos Klosters warmly welcomes its guests
and treats them to exquisite cuisine. The modern family-friendly adventure infrastructure offers unforgettable memories
for all generations, in summer and in winter.” This is how Klosters’ local mountain is being repositioned.
The Grisons comedian and presenter Claudio Zuccolini as well as the entrepreneur and Vice-President of the Klosters-Madri-
sa Bergbahnen AG Marie-Christine Jaeger-Firmenich have been appointed as brand ambassadors. Around 11 million francs
has been invested in a new “Schaffürggli” chairlift (see below), coupled with another 3.5 million francs in the expansion
of the snow-making facilities on the slopes adjacent to the chairlift. A new self-service restaurant with 600 seats has also
been built next to the mountain station of the Madrisa cable car, in which some 9 million francs has been invested.

Laser-controlled chairliftDesigned to assist children and the physically impaired
A new 6-seater chairlift, the “Schaffürggli”, has been built in the Madrisa ski arena. The 1,860-metre long chairlift covers
a height of 510 metres and carries 2,600 people per hour. The ascent takes seven minutes. Control of the seat height
of the chair is unique in Switzerland. A laser scans passengers and determines whether they are adults or children. The
hydraulic control adjusts the height of the seat so that even the smallest ski bunnies can comfortably climb onto the lift.
The comfort features include automatic bar closing/opening, heated seats, 6-seat chairlift with comfortable padded seats
and hoods. Ski sledges (wheelchair users in special winter sports equipment) can also be transported.

Lift pass for freeAn extraordinary offer to kick-start the winter season in Davos Klosters. With the “lift pass for free” offer, guests in the
pre-season will receive a free Davos Klosters Mountain ski pass for every overnight stay in one of the many partner hotels
and certain holiday apartments. This pre-season promotion runs from 18 November to 25 December 2016. davos.ch/ski or klosters.ch/ski

New Cross-country Ski Centre in Davos - Opening: November 2016
Davos Cross-country Ski Centre built in 1973 was replaced in the summer by a two-storey new building. The timber
construction has exceptional facilities for cross-country skiers on the ground floor, which is open to the public. The first
floor is reserved for the Swiss Ski National Ski Association and for the local ski club’s youth organisation. The basement
will house the plant rooms and stores. The outside space is sub-divided into a covered seating area and an uncovered
entrance area. Parking will be available in the garage of an adjacent private building. Davos is a national Swiss Ski cross-
country training hub and the only place in Switzerland to host World Cup races annually.
gemeindedavos.ch and davosnordic.ch
Extended snow-farmingThe cross-country trail is being extended to around 4 km
Snow-farming – the over-summering of snow – was extended in autumn 2015 with the construction of a new infrastructure.
Three times the volume of snow was produced and stored during the winter of 2015/16. This over-summered snow will
be used in late-autumn 2016 to create a 4 km-long cross-country trail in the lower Flüela Valley in Davos. At certain times
of the day, the snow-farmed cross-country ski trail will be reserved for elite sportsmen and women. A charge will be
made as a contribution to the cost of this additional trail. The charge will only be made for this trail and only during the
month of November. The entire cross-country ski network of 120 km can continue to be used free of charge throughout
the remaining season. The World Cup cross-country trail in the Flüela Valley will also be improved and its artificial snow-
making expanded. This will seriously improve conditions for World Cup racing as part of the Davos Nordic event. gemeindedavos.ch and davosnordic.ch

Davos World of Ice replaces the legendary natural ice rink Diverse worlds of ice replace the traditional ice rink
Davos natural ice rink will definitively no longer be prepared next winter. Davos Town Council pleasingly resolved at its
meeting on Thursday to go ahead with the “World of Ice” project. This winter a series of different themed ice rinks will
be offered. The “World of Ice” is due to open on 1 December. The project is initially designed as an experiment over two
winter seasons. The continued operation of the natural ice rink, which has been open since 1894/95, is uncertain as
the number of operating days has been in decline in recent years due to climatic conditions.
New event and sports hall in KlostersMajor events stimulate tourism
An event and sports hall have been added to Klosters Sports Centre and both multifunctional halls will open in December
2016. The Town Council has invested just under 13 million francs in the building project. The event hall has a floor area of
18 x 37 metres, and is designed for events for 350 to 2,000 people. The adjacent double sports hall with a floor area of
around 35 x 37 metres can be used for events with larger spectator numbers. The sports centre is intended to be used for
different types of sports, such as tennis, basketball, volleyball, martial arts etc. The events and sports hall is integrated in
the existing sports centre, which provides for spatial and technical synergies, enabling the existing restaurant to serve the
two new buildings and also incorporate the outdoor areas into the overall concept. Klosters hopes for a tourism boost from
the expansion of the sports centre, by attracting larger events and indoor events to Klosters, to generate more overnight
stays for the hotels in the village.

The 4-star “Spenglers Hotel” in Davos Platz will open in December 2016, offering 80 bedrooms and suites. The 31
apartments managed by the hotel in the Holsboer residences provide 60 to 100m2 of space, and are equipped with a

run as the Alexanderhaus Hospital. In recent years, it was converted to the “Hotel Alexander” and this summer it is being
fundamentally redesigned and rebuilt. In December 2016, the 4-star hotel will ceremoniously re-open under its new name –

Hotel “Seehof Davos”The traditional hotel re-opens as a five-star hotel
The traditional Hotel Seehof in Davos will be managed as a 5-star hotel from 1 December 2016, and will position itself as a
sporting family-friendly hotel with a classy atmosphere. The hotel, which has 100 rooms and suites, also boasts three first-
class gourmet restaurants and an exclusive spa and wellness zone. The “Seehof” lies on the Promenade, directly adjacent
to the valley station of the Parsenn funicular railway, and is one of the oldest buildings in Davos dating back to the 13th
century. A residential tower was built in 1289/91 on the site of the hotel, part of which makes up the hotel’s “Fireplace
Room” today. The building has welcomed guests since 1869, initially as a sanatorium and, then from 1932 – at the same
time as the Parsenn funicular railways was opened – as a hotel. The architecture of the hotel, renovated in 1991 and 2011,
represents a symbiosis between the traditional and modern. Hotel Seehof Davos AG has owned the new five-star hotel since
2011, which, in turn, is owned by the Davos-based Götz family.

Mischa Kuball (*1959) has been working in the public and institutional sector since 1984 and has received numerous
funding prizes and grants. Using the medium of light – in installations and photography – he explores architectural spaces
and conducts social and political discourses. Mischa Kuball has intensively worked with Bauhaus light experiments and
in particular with László Moholy-Nagy’s “Light-Space-Modulator”. It is known that Kirchner conducted intensive studies
of light and shade since the early 1930s and was interested in visual phenomena. Mischa Kuball was invited to develop a
lighting installation for the Kirchner Museum, with Kirchner’s spectral light studies as its inspiration and remixing Kirch-
ner’s colours.

The Davos Winter Sports Museum Society was founded on 18 February 1987 in the Davos Congress Centre. Objects and
documents from the Jürg Kaufmann Family Foundation, set up in 1991, and from the archive of the Seniors Hockey Club
Davos including the Spengler Cup, form the basis of the rich collection of valuable winter sports equipment and docu-
mentation. The exhibits date back to the earliest beginnings of winter sports up to the present (toboggans, bobs, skis,
ski bindings, skates, curling material etc.) After rather more modest beginnings in the uppermost floor of the former post
office in Davos Platz, the museum moved in 1999 to the ground floor of its current building with an exhibition floor area

winter sports arenas have over 60 high-performance lift and cable car systems, which link around 300 km of slopes for
all levels of difficulty. Hotel guests can ski and snowboard free of charge in the pre-season with the “lift pass for free”

Parsenn – the classic
The Parsenn is the cradle of skiing in Switzerland. In 1895, four English tourists lost their way when heading towards Arosa
and ultimately landed in Küblis. Locals repeated the descent from Weissfluh to Küblis a year later – and the legendary
descent was discovered. The Parsenn grew with the construction of the Parsenn funicular railway in 1931/32 to become
the pace-setter for Swiss ski tourism. Today visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the speed and comfort of the new
Parsenn funicular railway. Once again the Parsenn is creating a link between tradition and modernity – it is and remains
the classic skiing mountain arena for skiers and carvers alike. The ski arena can be reached from Davos using the Parsenn
funicular railway and from Klosters by the Gotschna cable car.

Visitors take advantage of the fabulous slopes on the Jakobshorn for snowboarding, carving or simply enjoying a spectacular
descent. Freestylers get their adrenaline rushes in the Jatz Park. The mountain lodges on the Jakobshorn seduce winter
sports enthusiasts to linger awhile on the mountain: the Jazz Lodge is one of the most legendary and is known far and
wide for its whirlpool, parties and sun terrace. Hot sounds and a host of events make the Jakobshorn the ‘hot’ destination
mountain for an up-for-it crowd. At the foot of the Jakobshorn, close to the traditional Bolgen ski lift, the new superpipe
offers an added treat for the freestylers, not forgetting the Bolgen apres-ski paradise.

The focus is on alternative sports, such as winter hiking, snowshoe walking, freeriding and ski tours, in the sunny
mountains in the Flüela Valley, with a series of well signposted winter hiking routes and designated snow shoe trails (15
km). Enthusiastic cross-country skiers can train at an altitude of over 2,300 metres on two cross-country trails close

bustle of the crowds. Using their ski pass, guests can travel free of charge and comfortably by bus and train to the bottom
station. In addition to its extensive wealth of ski slopes, the area also features a 3.5 km long toboggan run, Twice a week
romantics can also go night skiing and night tobogganing. A beautiful winter hiking trail takes hikers from the top station
down into the valley, while sun-seekers can soak up the sun on the sun desks close to the mountain station. After a
magnificent day’s skiing, savour a hot chocolate or a classic hot Schümli-Pflümli in the Blockhütte by the valley station

Following on from the 2014 Swiss National Yodelling Festival, another major traditionally Swiss event will be held in Davos on
18 June 2017. The sub-group of the North East Swiss Mountain Wrestling Association (NOSV) will be held in the Vaillant Arena.
Boxers from the cantonal boxing associations of Appenzell, Glarus, Grisons, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau and Zurich
measure up against each other . Apart from the Swiss National Mountain Wrestling Festival, the Unspunnenschwinget and
Kilchbergschwinget, the sub-group festivals are the major events in this sport. The event is brought to life by the enthusiastic
spectators, the exceptionally loyal friends of boxing and the family-friendly atmosphere.
