Willows Montessori
Nursery School Newcastle—North of England
Workshop Information Booklet
Why choose Willows Montessori Nursery School?
Willows Montessori is a small Montessori school in the beautiful
North East of England. Based in Ryton Village, near both Gates-
head and Newcastle, it is a peaceful location that is perfect for
getting away from the hustle and bustle and focussing on your
studies.
Our workshop is a two week workshop with a rest day in the mid-
dle. You will benefit from working with a small group (up to 12 stu-
dents at the most) with access to the full range of materials during
your practice sessions.
We will have sole use of the ‘Foxes Den’ which is a new wooden
classroom complete with veranda set in the rear garden of the
nursery. Facilities in the den include a small kitchen with a fridge,
kettle, etc, and if the weather is nice perhaps some of the sessions
might take place outdoors.
There is some childcare available at The Willows nursery but please book early to avoid disappointment. For further infor-mation please contact Alison Barker on 01748 821466 or email alibarker58@gmail.com.

Places to Eat and Local Amenities
For Lunch or Snacks - Sainsbury, Co-op and a café are within walking
distance of the nursery and provide a variety of sandwiches, salads and other snack items. As there will only be half an hour for lunch-time you will need to bring all provisions with you.
Evening meals – Several pubs are situated within walking distance and these include The Half Moon where main courses start from around £10.00, and
Ryton County House.
Free Time
In Ryton there are lovely walks in the woods and along by the river, however, should
you have time to go a little further then there are a myriad of ideas.
Gibside is a country estate formerly owned by the Bowes-Lyon family and now run by
the National Trust, there are wonderful gardens to explore and it is set amongst the
peaks and slopes of the Derwent Valley. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gibside
The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Sir Antony Gormley,
located near Gateshead in Tyne and Wear and was completed in 1998. It is a
magnificent steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54
metres across. www.gateshead.gov.uk/angel/angelmen.htm
Metro Centre has miles of shopping plus bowling, cinemas and restaurants and the
all important IKEA to stock up on nursery supplies. www.intumetrocentre.co.uk/
Newcastle is an amazing place and links with Gateshead which is set on the south
bank of the Tyne, they offer a wide selection of galleries, museums, theatres,
riverside restaurants and Chinatown. The Biscuit Factory is one of my favourite
galleries and has an excellent café. Do not miss Seven Stories, the National Centre
for Children’s Books, which has interactive sections and a wonderful book shop
complete with story chair. Gateshead Millenium Bridge, Sage at Gateshead, The
Discovery Museum in Newcastle and The Quayside in Newcastle are all worth a visit. www.newcastlegateshead.com

Workshop Hours and Preparation
Workshop Hours
For the Apparatus workshop hours will be between 9am and 6pm which will include
two hours of supervised apparatus practice.
You must attend on both Saturdays (but not on Sunday).
Remember to bring notebook, pens, coloured pencils and a laptop/tablet will be useful to
access the VLE whilst here. The training centre will provide free Wi-Fi although this may
be limited in the Foxes Den.
Preparation for Apparatus Workshop
You will need to refer to MCI modules 6 - 10 during the sessions (AEL, Sensorial
Education, Literacy, Numeracy, KUW). We advise you to work from a hard copy, in printed
form, which you can either print off in advance or buy from the office of the training
centre. (The Literacy and Numeracy modules should be printed in colour). The complete
set of PDF’s of all your Modules is available in the resources folder in Moodle (in the sub-
folder Complete Module Texts).
If you wish to view and work with the modules electronically you will need to bring your
laptop/tablet with you. Electronic devices should be brought to the training centre fully
charged. For health and safety reasons, devices cannot be plugged into the mains in the
classroom.
Prior to the workshop please read all the introduction sections of the curriculum modules
if you have not yet reached them in your schedule. This will support you in the oral
professional discussion that forms part of your final assessment for the workshop.
Students on the Early Years Educator course (EYE) and Introduction to Montessori Practice course (IMP) will take part in a practical assessment and professional discussion on the final Saturday of the Workshop. This is a compulsory component of the workshop.
Early Years Educator students will be assessed against a range of assessment criteria which will be either met or not met. Any outstanding assessment criteria not met during the practical assessment and professional discussion will need to be reassessed through an additional and final assessment opportunity. This may involve having to attend an additional workshop, dependent on the assessment criteria not met.
Introduction to Montessori Practice students cannot be awarded with the MCI certificate unless the practical assessment is successfully completed. Students who do not successfully complete this part of the course are invited to book for another workshop, which will incur an additional charge.
The practical assessment and professional discussion will last approximately 1½ hours and you will be allocated a specific time during the workshop. The schedule will be posted prominently on the notice board during the second week of the workshop. If you plan to travel home on the Saturday, please let us know in advance so that arrangements can be made for an early slot.
