WHAT DOES THE NATIVE AMERICAN PROGRAM DO?
The Native American Indian Education Program (NAIEP) provides many services for
Native students and families within WPS. Just a few of the services we provide are:
Expanded tutoring: We provide tutoring for students through our expanded tutoring
program. We have a number of tutors that are in over 50 schools in the district. If you feel
your child is in need of and could benefit from our tutoring program, please contact us at
973-7906.
Support for Instruction: NAIEP works with teachers and schools to help them become
more familiar with the best ways for Native students to learn. We do this through a variety
of activities and discussions, but also through one-on-one relationships.
Support for Family Involvement: NAIEP provides opportunities throughout the year such
as our Super Saturdays, NAPAC, Senior Celebration and School’s Out Powwow. There are
also numerous community events that take place throughout the year. For upcoming
events, please visit our district website at www.usd259.org/page/4205.
College Readiness: Our Newman Native American Scholars Program allows our Native
students to earn college credit (free of charge) by attending Newman University one night a
week during the second semester of the school year.
Advocacy for Families: If a Native student is having an issue at their school, their parents
can contact NAIEP and we will work with them to help to resolve the issue.
Support for the Title VII Grant: NAIEP works with the School Board and NAPAC to
implement the guidelines of the Title VII grant. Together we are working to make the
district a better place for Native students to learn and achieve.
WELCOME
As the new lead for the Native American Indian Education Program (NAIEP), I would like
to welcome everyone to the 2016-2017 school year. I want to encourage students, and
parents alike, to take advantage of everything that the NAIEP has to offer. The purpose of
the Wichita Public Schools Title VII Native American Indian Education Program is to
serve Indian students so that they meet or exceed the same challenging state academic
achievement standards all students are expected to meet. Our program currently
supports over 1,400 Native students who attend USD 259 schools. These students are
supported through a variety of academic and cultural activities including tutors who
are placed in select schools across the district. For more information about our program,
please contact our office anytime. Have a great year!

Completing the Title VII Student Edibility Certification (506 Form)
The Federal ED 506 form certifies a student's eligibility for the variety of services our
program provides. (See previous page)
In order for a student to be eligible for our program, they must be registered with or has a
biological parent or grandparent who it registered with a tribe, band or group that is:
• Federally recognized (including Alaska Native) or
• State recognized
The definitions appear on the ED 506 form.
Federally recognized tribes are limited to those indigenous to the United States. A list of
federally recognized tribes can be obtained through the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the
Department of the Interior.
The Web is a source for state-recognized tribes. The U.S. Department of Education does not
maintain a master list. It is recommended that you use official state websites only—the informal
term “non-federally recognized” does not imply state-recognized. Tribes pursuing recognized
status (Federal or State) are not eligible.
In order to qualify for federal funding with the Title VII grant, the student, a parent, or
grandparent must be enrolled in a United States tribe, band or group. Deceased parents or
grandparents who were tribal members also meet the federal or state recognized requirements.
On the form, please provide:
Name of individual with tribal membership: Important! This information is now required.
o If the person with membership is the student, write the student’s name.
o If the person with membership is the parent, write the parent’s name.
o If the person with membership is the grandparent, write the grandparent’s name.
Check which individual with the membership is named. Please make only one selection.
o Please do not write your child’s name if your child is not currently enrolled.
Proof of membership or enrollment number (if readily available). Important! This
information is now required. If the information is not available you must explain why.
Enter the tribal membership or enrollment number of the person enrolled.
If you don’t have the membership or enrollment information available, you must explain why.
Other (Explanation): Please fill this section out if you do not have enrollment information.
You must explain why you do not have the enrollment information.
º If the person enrolled is deceased or estranged. Please do not guess if they were enrolled,
you must be sure.
º The child may be adopted, and specific information about enrollment is withheld for legal
purposes.
º If you or your child are enrolled, but the enrollment information is currently lost and needs
to be replaced.
Thank you for your support and cooperation. If you have any questions, or if you need a
copy of the eligibility form, please call 973-9706 or email ddomebo@usd259.net.

Super Saturday! Our Super Saturday events are held one Saturday a month during the school year. Our
focus is getting and keeping in touch with our native roots. We do this in a variety of
ways, such as storytelling, native arts & crafts, as well as teaching native culture and
concepts.
Be sure to check out our Super Saturday dates. Plan on attending them at the Indian
Center and join us for a good time!
3rd Annual 5K Culture Dash On November 5
th the Mid-America All-
Indian Center will hold the 3rd
Annual 5K
Culture Dash. This event celebrates our
past while shaping our future by
encouraging participants – from the
youngest to the oldest – to pay attention to
their health, and celebrate every part of
who they are, and who they represent in
today’s multicultural community. We have
the honor again this year to help volunteer
at this event. As part of our Super
Saturday program event in November we
will be volunteering our time and
enthusiasm to help cheer on the runners.
Participation in this event is limited to 40
individuals, so if you are interested in
volunteering, please contact Dal at
316-973-7906 by October 14th

Michelle Conine- Program Assistant
My name is Michelle Conine. I was born, raised and have lived in
Wichita, KS all of my life. I have been married to my husband, Allen,
for 35 years. We have three children and four grandchildren. I am
Shawnee, Delaware, and Cherokee by birth and registered with the
Shawnee Tribe in Oklahoma. I attended Black Elementary, Hadley
Junior High and graduated from Wichita North High. I have also
attended Wichita State University. I have worked for the Wichita
Public Schools for 15 years and am excited to be the new Program
Assistant for the Title VII program.
My three children were part of the program and my two school-age grandchildren are new
to the program this year. I have served as Secretary, Vice Chair and Chairperson of the
Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPAC) while my children were active in
the program. I am a member of the Board of Trustees for the Mid-America All-Indian
Center and serve as the Education Committee chair. I also teach several classes at the
center. My hobbies and interests include Genealogy, pottery and beadwork, silversmithing
and jewelry making, painting, reading and traveling.
I feel educating our Native Children in culture, language, and their heritage is important so
we do not lose this part of our identity. I believe it is equally important to educate non-
Natives so we can break down the barriers of prejudice, and stereotyping.
