PSC SPORTS O U T L O O KP aul Sm ith’s again faces an up
hill battle to gain recognition as a small but potential power in the Junior College Sport circle.
To you new students uninform ed of the ath letic s tren g th of Paul Sm ith’s Coliege, m ay I rem ind you th a t our basketball team w as one of the top Junior College team s in the E ast w ith a record of 17 wins and 1 defeat, and th a t ou r ski team distinguished itself by w inning tw enty trophies and 15 medals.
Since basketball will be in the spot light in a few weeks, I ’ll try to give a picture of our possibilities for the forthcom ing season.
Coach Ken Tobey’s m en face a12 gam e schedule. A fter looking down the list I find 5 gam es on our own hardwood and 7 on the road. To those who know the sport and who are aw are of the advan tage of playing a t home, it is obvious th a t the going will be rough, w ithout even glancing a t the s tren g th of the opposition. We open w ith U tica Tech (home) December 1; Geneseo S ta te Teachers (hom e) December 7; Middlebury (aw ay) December 8; Potsdam S ta te Teachers (aw ay) December 13; Potsdam S tate Teachers (home) Jan u ary 17; U tica Tech (aw ay) Ja n u a ry 30; Middlebury (home) F eb ruary 4; Geneseo S tate Teachers (aw ay) F ebruary 7; Rochester T e c h (aw ay) February 8; O ttaw a U niversity (aw ay) F ebruary 13; Canton Aggies (home) F eb ru ary 21; Canton Aggies (away) Feb. 27.
A fter giving you a resum e of the gam es to be played let us discuss the potential s treng th of th is y ea r’s team. A fter losing six of la s t year’s squad, the Paul S m ith ’s five13 faced w ith the problem of living up to the very fine record m aintained by the 1950 quintet. Returning for their last year a t P.S.C. will be such outstanding p layers as Holcombe, Deianey, Donchey, G ardner and Corl.
As fa r as I can see, Coach Tobey will find it tough to cut down the squad. Considering the num ber of excellent prospects out for the team, it looks like a successful year.
Coach Tobey is planning m any in tram ural activities, but the vital problem is th a t of student interest. W ithout the co-operation of the student body it will be impossible to plan such activities. To s ta r t the ball rolling, each dorm, or individual group shou.d en ter team s in the proposed in tram ura l basketball league. Hand in the ro ster of your team s to Coach Tobey as soon as possible!
