Who We Are• SUBC is a group of undergraduate engineering
students from the University of British Columbia
• Team Goals
– Design , build and test a human powered, flooded submarine
– Promote UBC and UBC student teams
– Race at the 11th International Submarine Race in Bethesda Maryland
Design Philosophy
• A Low key environment, with members who are there to learn and build, while having fun
• Keep as much design and manufacturing in house as possible
• Have reasoning behind every design decision
3
Project Phases• There are 4 key phases to the project
– Preliminary Preparations• Goal setting, Fundraising, Certification
– Design• NACA Aerofoil, Wind tunnels, Modeling
– Manufacture• Fiber-glass lay-up, system manufacturing, Aesthetics,
Safety, Ergonomics
– Execution• Planning for race day, Pilot preparation, Organization and
communication
Gearbox
• The gearbox was inherited from a previous Capstone Design Project
• Bushings were chosen for their corrosion resistance
• Gear set-up enables counter-rotating propellers
Hull Design
• 2D Approximations– NACA data
• 3D CFD Analysis– RANS simulations of 5 submarine hulls

Hull Manufacturing-Perform an analysis of pro/cons of each method
-Assign a weighted value to each pro/con
-Decide on a process using weighted decision matrix, past team advice & industry
-Optimize!!
-Begin manufacturing

FINISHING QUALITY
-Kevlar/Carbon Body with Ribs and stiffeners
-2 piece design
Fin Design
• Building on– airfoil research
– Submarine control research
– Low Aspect Ratio wing/fin research
– CFD analysis, in cooperation with
CD-Adapco
Fins Used
• Windsurfing fins modified for submarine use
• Impact resistant Plastic • Fit with our teams time
constraints• Initial sizing estimates used
for fin sizing
11
Ergonomics and Life Support
• Optimizing the “human factor”
• Getting the most power
out of our pilot as possible
• Ensuring pilot and diver
safety
Testing
• Two Separate Pool times• Effective for learning what worked and
what didn’t• Had free movement at end of second
session
15
Budget
• Kept costs low through in kind sponsorship and in house manufacturing
• Use resources effectively
