Saint Patrick’s day was celebratedat Culp’s Café – complete with‘green beer’, Irish Stew, corned beef‘n cabbage, and two teen-ageddancers named Greer who did an‘Irish Jig’! One most enthusiasticdiner was Anne Denison who tookhome “…two orders of ‘Irish” for ourdinner tomorrow night.”

-----------------------------------Lewis Echeverria was a graduate

of Oakwood High School, Class of1960. Lewis was an AFS (AmericanField Service) exchange student fromVictoria in the Basque area of north-ern Spain. His ‘host’ family wasBrad and Paula Schaeffer onHarman Avenue.

“We had a wonderful class,” con-tinued Lewis. “Bruce Comisar,Bonnie Geiger, Margie ToddAnderson, Connie Lytle andRooney Mereness…I’ve been backfor our ‘Twentieth’ and our ‘Fortieth’

Reunions…and Paula, Alan, andKurt Schaeffer have visited me inSpain. This year is the first time I’vebeen with Doug Schaeffer in fiftyyears.”

“I received an Engineering degreefrom the Univ. of Madrid in ’67 andhave worked in Eastern Europe foryears. This trip to Oakwood was tohonor Paula on her birthday…yes,I’ll be back next year for my FiftiethOakwood High School Reunion!”

-----------------------------------Saturday evening was a perform-

ance in the Classical Series of theDayton Philharmonic Orchestra.Dinner at ‘Citilites’ in the Schusterwas delightful. And then on the pre-concert lecture in the auditorium. The two lecturers were RobertWard, composer of the second offer-ing of the evening, and Pulitzer Prizewinner for his ‘The Crucible’, and theGuest Conductor, Sara Jobin.

Questions from the audience wererapid-fire – and so were the edifyinganswers.

At 7:45 pm the lecture attendeesfound their rightful seats, and thestage was readied for the concert. When Sara Jobin had ‘lectured’ she’dhad long flowing stunning blond hairand a vibrant blouse and long skirt. When she re-appeared as GuestConductor she wore a black tux, andher hair was in semi corn-rows and along pony tail. “Is that the same ladywe just saw fifteen minutes ago?”everyone asked their seat-mates. Ms.Jobin’s conducting style was dyna-mite and she seemed to electrify theorchestra.

When the stage had to be re-con-figured for the piano in the secondnumber, Ms. Jobin took the mike to“…tell you some stories. First let mecongratulate the audience for beinghere tonight and not at a basketball

game. I sure hope UD does well inthe series…it’s awesome to be withRobert Ward…he’s been in the musicbusiness so long he calls AaronCopeland - ‘Aaron’ – imagine!”…

Chris Saunders and AnneJohnson, and Ed Kuhns were intheir regular seats – front row firsttier of the balcony. Rev. JosephGoetz could be seen in his regularseats on the main floor. Joey Thielewas at dinner and the lecture. JohnRemick chatted with friends follow-ing the concert.

-----------------------------------Last Sunday afternoon was one of

the most exciting and delightful everspent! At 3 pm Oakwood-ites, HighSchool parents, friends, studentsgathered for the matinee – and finalperformance of “Fiddler On TheRoof”. Broadway never put on amore polished, excitingly choreo-graphed, staged, or costumed produc-tion of “Fiddler”!

Noah Berry really ‘nailed’ therole of ‘Tevye’, the Milkman.Noah’s sister, Hannah Berry, played

‘The Matchmaker’. Rumor has itHannah’s been accepted at WrightState Performing Arts Department –look out Stuart McDowell!‘Tevye’s’ wife was played by KatieMauch….his daughters were KristaWelter, Nora Murphy, JoannaDraper, and the youngest daughterwas Vivi Raab. Vivi is a student atHarman Elementary. Her parents,Maryann & Dr. Mike Raab werefront’n center and sitting with Poky& Tony Huffman. “I’m going hometo call Sally & John Fisher to tellthem whatta ‘star’ their granddaugh-ter Vivi was in ‘Fiddler”.

Nancy & Rev. Jack Koepke,Trudy Krisher, Jerry McLearen,Dr. Ron Warwar and his sisterDr.Samia Borchers… were all clap-ping and cheering. And whatta score:“Matchmaker”, “If I Were A RichMan”, “Sunrise, Sunset”…..

Michael Wadham – Oakwood’sDirector/Choreographer could giveHarold Prince and Jerome Robbins(the Broadway originals) a few les-sons!
