Why Buy Locally?Buying from your local farmer allows you to support local agriculture. This means that the food you are eating comes from nearby, and does not require us to waste lots of energy and petroleum to ship the food halfway around the world. You are eating food in your own environment, where it has perfectly-created nutrients for your specific climate and region. You are also supporting the environment by reducing the usage of fossil fuels.

Your dollars contribute to the local economy and create good jobs. It’s estimated that if every Ontario household shifted $10 of their weekly spending budget to their local community, it would create 10,000 new jobs. This is because of the multiplier effect: if you buy an Ontario-made quiche at the grocery store, money goes to pay the distributor, who pays the baker, who pays the egg, dairy, spinach and wheat farmers -- and all of these people will go on and spend money locally.

What does “farmgate” or “farm stand” mean?As the name implies, farm gate sales is a marketing strategy undertaken by the farmer whereby consumers come to the farm to buy produce and, in some cases, pick the produce themselves. Examples include vegetables, eggs meat, berries, fruits, flowers as well as numerous handmade crafts and processed foods. In general, there is no limit to the type of items that can be marketed in this manner as long as there are willing buyers.

Why should you call ahead to visit a farm? Most farmers are busy being farmers. Their days are full of farm responsibilities from seeding, transpanting, harvesting to tending to livestock. Farmers also have families to take care of as well as business responsibilities. Not all farms are open to customers everyday. Many have designated days and times during the day to drop by the farm. It is always best to call the farm ahead of time to ensure someone will be there, as well as to know what products are available.
