1. Wheat is sown in the autumn. The wheat plant require water, warmth, light and fertiliser to grow

2. Farmers also protect them against weeds, disease and pests

3. In spring, the plants grow fast producing ears of grain which ripen in the summer

4. These grains are harvested in the summer using combine harvesters.

5. The wheat is dried and stored before being sent to flour mills

6. On arrival at the mill the wheat is cleaned to remove dust, straw and other impurities

7. It is then milled through steel rollers with teeth that break the grains open

8. Smooth rollers are used to produce fine flour which is the sieved to remove the bran

9. There are three main types of flour – white, brown and wholemeal (which contains the most bran)

10. The flour is sent to bakers who add yeast and water to make dough. The dough is allowed to rise and become spongy before it is baked into bread
