WHAT’S IN THE BLACK BOX?Free PROCESS OF SCIENCE demo available until December 31, 2017.

This freestanding exhibit is easy to incorporate into existing displays. The 6-foot tall, interactive tube provides a simple demonstration of the process of science and scientific modelling.

Visitors work individually or together to pull on the ropes and see some surprising results. Using their observations, creativity and collaboration, visitors can sketch a model of what is happening inside. As they review other models they realize that there is more than one valid explanation of what is happening inside the tube. This is a critical “AHA” moment for learners of all ages as they realize that different models can explain the same phenomena.

Key learnings:• Different models can explain the same phenomena• A model remains viable until new observations and data disprove it• Models can never be proven right, they can only be proven wrong• If a model is disproved, scientists must revise their models or

create new models that explain the new observations

Additional challenge:Provide a station with manipulatives (toilet paper rolls, strings, variety of buttons, beads, washers, etc) and have visitors build their own models for testing.
