GEAR UP is designed to: Provide low-income students with greater access to a postsecondary education

It’s a 7 year commitment to the HISD community:

This means we’re following the current 8th grade cohort all the way through their first year in college

GEAR UP Goals: Increase academic behaviors,

performance and preparation for a postsecondary education

Increase the rate of high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment

Increase student and family knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and financing

Gather appropriate student data in order to accomplish GEAR UP goals

GEAR UP Financial Basics: GEAR UP is a

federally funded grant that will provide goods and services that specifically target the college readiness of the Class of 2017

GEAR UP Financial Basics: GEAR UP is allotted

approximately $800,000 each school year to pursue goals as outlined by the grant

GEAR UP must accumulate $400,000 in donated goods or services (in-kind) each school year

GEAR UP Financial Basics: What is in-kind?In-kind examples include: Donated time After-hours tutoring, chaperoning Uncompensated professional

development Donated goods Books School supplies Donated services Guest speakers Job shadowing

We need your help. Because our school

staff often goes beyond their contracted hours to provide our students everything they can, we ask that you to document those extra hours

We’ve included a documentation sheet that makes this as easy as checking off a box and getting a quick signature
