What is a machining Process?

•Machining is the manufacturing process by which parts can be

produced to the desired dimensions and surface finish from a blank

by gradual removal of the excess material in the form of chips with

the help of a sharp cutting tool.

• It’s a cold working process

• Relative motion between work piece and cutting tool is provided to

remove material.

Machine Tool

•A machine tool is a power driven cutting machine which is used for shaping, sizing or processing a work piece to a product of desired accuracy by removing excess materials from the surface in the form of metal chips.• Lathe, drilling machine, shaping machine, planning

machine, milling machine etc.

Machining Operations

• Turning- Cylindrical parts

• Drilling- Round holes in a solid material or enlarging existing holes

• Shaping/planing/Broaching-Creating Slots, Grooves, Channels in

work piece

•Milling-Producing flat and complex shapes
