MANISTEE -- There are certainpartnerships that just seem to work welltogether, and one of those is the way the
Manistee County 4-H companion animalcommittee has worked with local LionsClubs on the Leader Dog program.
The two groups embarked upon thisoutstanding project six years ago thathelps train puppies to become LeaderDogs to help vision impaired persons beable to function better in the world. Theprogram is a natural fit for the LionsClub, as they have been active in visionassistance programs for many years, but Deb Laws of the Michigan StateUniversity Extension office and 4-HCompanion Committee said the programhas been very beneficial from their end aswell.
This week they are visiting the areaschools to educate the children aboutthe importance of Leader Dog. Howevera more important component of theprogram is for the children to recognizea Leader Dog when they see one, andto know the proper procedure in beingaround one.
Laws said that the presenters enjoytalking with the children about LeaderDogs, and that one former area residentcame a very long distance with his LeaderDog to be a part of the program.
This is our sixth year, and we havequite a few presenters today, said Laws.Tom Silverthorn came all the way fromHurley, South Dakota for our program.
We are just really pleased that this pro-gram continues. The community gives usso much support, and the schools wel-come us with open arms.
We thought when we lost Tom itmight put a dent in the program, saidLaws. However, last week we were fortu-nate to have Brett Wattles come in fromthe Leader Dog Facility to fill in, and it isust a well coordinated event.
Laws pointed out that the programis going strong in putting dogs into
the Leader Dog program. She said thatJohn and Barb Snyder just took in aseven-week old Golden Retriever namedNellie that they are beginning to train.
It was back in 2004 when the programtook root with some contributions fromthe local Lions clubs to establish a LeaderDog program Manistee County.
We started out with those Lions with
additions and Clara Kraus Saari who isa Lions Club member has baked thosefamous blueberry muffins and $700 piesas a fundraisers, said Laws. We put allthat money for safekeeping into a com-panion animal account, and 4-H is thesteward of those funds, so we are auditedevery year.
When the puppy raisers have anunusual expense they will take funds outof there and more often than not these

LEADER DOGS:From Page 1puppy raisers are doingthis for free. It startedout that we were going topay for their dog food andcollars, but some will not
take a dime. Some say,No, we just want to dothis.
Laws said they haveput eight or nine dogs
into the program over the years. The original planwas for 4-H members toraise the dogs, but it didntquite work out that way.
Claras dream wasthat 4-H members couldraise the dogs, but it didntturn out to be that wayas a lot of the memberssaid we dont want to giveup the dog after raisingit for a year. They felt it
wouldnt be possible to
part with it, so it has reallyturned out that adults inthe community that have
come forward to take thedogs. The door is still opento kids in the communitythat want to, but nonehave come forward.
Kraus-Saari pointed
out that she has been verypleased with the way theprogram has gone over the
years.It has been a wonder-
ful program, and I gotthis idea when I was atthe Lions Internationalprogram in Chicago and
I figured how can weinstitute that in ManisteeCounty, said Kraus Saari.
With the support of thefellow Lions of ManisteeCounty and the peoplethat have bought my $50muffins and $700 piesit has been outstanding.
The puppy raisers get noreimbursement from LionsInternational at all. Dr.Jeffrey Westheimer has
been wonderful in that allveterinary care has beenfree and Wild Things andBest in Show have doneall the grooming so peoplehave been extremely gen-erous.
All you have to do islook at the children andsee how excited they areabout it.
The first dogs toentered the program were
Jobi, a black lab wholater changed careers andis now involved in arsoninvestigations in Maine, and Bo, who is pairedup with someone in Chile.Other dogs have followed
with great results over theyears.
Those who took partin the sixth annual LeadDog schools at Jefferson,Kennedy, Madison andKaleva Norman Dicksonschools this week wereKim Wattles withAberdeen, Brett Wattlesfrom Leader Dog withCeCe, Kathie Bachmanand Jazz, John and BarbSnyder with Nellie andTom Silverthorn withRanger.
They showed the chil-dren the types of thingsthey work on with thedogs in the year that theykeep them. They are allthings that will help them
when they move on tothe Leader Dog School inRochester.
When you see a dog
wearing something likeNellie or Jazz is wear-ing you should nevercome up and try to pet thedog, said Kim Wattles. Those signify that theyare working and the dogshave to remain focused. If
you take away the atten-tion of a dog then that cancause them to lose theirfocus and possibly causethe person to trip oversomething or walk into anobject.
Wattles told the stu-dents that the dogs they
typically use for theLeader Dog programare German Shepherds,Golden Retrievers, Collies,Labrador Retrievers, andeven occasionally a poodle.
It has been a wonderful program, and I got this idea when Iwas at the Lions International program in Chicago and I figuredhow can we institute that in Manistee County.
