AS A girl, Wendy Whiteley was enthralled with theidea of a place where nobody could find her. ‘‘Myfavourite book was The Secret Garden. It was thestory of a little girl who found a garden behind athicket, a cubby hole where she could hide.’’

Given the media attention she has garneredfrom her famously volatile relationship with theartist Brett Whiteley, who died of a heroin over-dose in 1992, it would be easy to think that as agrown-up she might still like a place to hide.

But although Ms Whiteley is tired of talkingabout ‘‘the sex, drugs and rock’n’roll’’, the flam-boyant 68-year-old and grand dame of Sydney’sart scene is not one to hold back.

In 1995, she tired of looking across the tangledmountain of weeds, rubbish and broken drainagepipes that stood between her Lavender Bay houseand the railway line, and decided to take charge.‘‘I just got stubborn,’’ she says. ‘‘If it [the land]continued to be ignored, the bulldozers wouldhave been in here tomorrow [to develop it].’’

With the help of two gardeners and the odd

backpacker, she has transformed the almosttwo hectares of RailCorp land into an oasis ofverdant whimsy. A thatch of bamboo curvesprotectively over a small table and chairs, pathsmeander up terraced hills towards hidey holes,and old toys, railway parts and wheelbarrowsrust gracefully among the foliage.

The locals call it Wendy’s secret garden. ‘‘Itallows children or people to have a secret spotwhere they can do their own dreaming,’’ she says.

And she hopes her Order of Australia medal forgardening and visual arts will push the StateGovernment to protect the garden, which hasbeen leased for a year by North Sydney Counciland was opened to the public in November.

‘‘It’s nice to be acknowledged, but only if itmeans having more than a medal. Hopefully itmeans the Government will bite the bullet andgive the garden to the people and realise that thearts in this country, of any form, need support.’’

Ms Whiteley makes no distinction between thegarden and her work with the Brett Whiteley Stu-dio, which the Government bought in 1993. Bothare art, she says.

In Decemberlast year she reached the‘‘definite highlight’’ of hercareer with the officialopening of the NationalPortrait Gallery in Canberra.
