Opening Hymn

We sing our opening hymn:

The Lord’s my shepherd

LHS 387 CAL 293

‘Scottish Psalter’, 1650

Based on Francis Rous, 1641, and others

The Lord’s my shepherd

1. The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want;

He makes me down to lie

In pastures green: He leadeth me

The quiet waters by.

The Lord’s my shepherd

2. My soul He doth restore again:

And me to walk doth make

Within the paths of righteousness,

E’en for His own name’s sake.

The Lord’s my shepherd

3. Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,

Yet will I fear no ill;

For Thou art with me, and Thy rod

And staff me comfort still.

The Lord’s my shepherd

4. My table Thou hast furnished

In presence of my foes;

My head Thou dost with oil anoint,

And my cup overflows.

The Lord’s my shepherd

5. Goodness and mercy all my life

Shall surely follow me;

And in God’s house for evermore

My dwelling-place shall be.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Friends in Christ:

Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

19

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

20

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

21

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,so that we may delight in your will

and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

Amen.

22

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

Peace be with you.C: Amen.

23

Liturgy of the WORD

FIRST READINGActs 4:5-12

Peter and John before the council

R: The first Reading for the fourth Sunday of Easter is written in Chapter 4 of Acts, beginning at Verse five.

28

Acts 4:5-12 5The next morning the leaders, the

elders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses met in Jerusalem. 6The high priest Annas was there, as well as Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other members of the high priest's family.

29

Acts 4:5-12 7They brought in Peter and John and

made them stand in the middle while they questioned them. They asked, "By what power and in whose name have you done this?”

30

Acts 4:5-12 8Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and

told the nation's leaders and the elders:

9You are questioning us today about a kind deed in which a crippled man was healed. 10But there is something we must tell you and everyone else in Israel.

31

Acts 4:5-12

This man is standing here completely well because of the power of Jesus Christ from Nazareth. You put Jesus to death on a cross, but God raised him to life. 11He is the stone that you builders thought was worthless, and now he is the most important stone of all.

32

Acts 4:5-12 12Only Jesus has the power to save! His

name is the only one in all the world that can save anyone.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

33Psalm 23 CEV

34

Psalm 23 CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 231You, LORD, are my shepherd. I will

never be in need.C: 2You let me rest in fields of green

grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water,

35

Psalm 23 CEV

R: 3and you refresh my life. You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths.

C: 4I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won't be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd's rod makes me feel safe.

36

Psalm 23 CEV

R: 5You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honour me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows.

C: 6Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, LORD.  » »

37

Psalm 23 CEV

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

38

Second reading1 John 3:16-24

The Christian's assurance

R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 3 of First John, beginning at Verse 16.

39

1 John 3:16-24 16We know what love is because Jesus

gave his life for us. That's why we must give our lives for each other. 17If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot say we love God. 18Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it.

40

1 John 3:16-24 19When we love others, we know that we

belong to the truth, and we feel at ease in the presence of God. 20But even if we don't feel at ease, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

41

1 John 3:16-24 21Dear friends, if we feel at ease in the

presence of God, we will have the courage to come near him. 22He will give us whatever we ask, because we obey him and do what pleases him. 23God wants us to have faith in his Son Jesus Christ and to love each other. This is also what Jesus taught us to do.

42

1 John 3:16-24 24If we obey God's commandments, we

will stay one in our hearts with him, and he will stay one with us. The Spirit that he has given us is proof that we are one with him

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL M: The Holy Gospel is written in

Chapter 10 of the Gospel according to St John, beginning at Verse eleven.

C:Glory to you, O Lord .

 John 10:11-18 NIV

The good shepherd dies for the sheep

43

GOSPEL M: Jesus said:

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.

44

GOSPEL Then the wolf attacks the flock and

scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.

45

GOSPEL 16 I have other sheep that are not of

this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.

46

GOSPEL 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it

down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

This is the Gospel of the LordC: Praise to you, O Christ raised

to live forever.47

prayer after the GOSPEL M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, our good

shepherd, for being willing to die for your sheep. Lead us to know you and to follow you.

C: Amen

48

APOSTLE’S CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

APOSTLE’S CREED

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

APOSTLE’S CREED

He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

*or: Christian; ‘catholic’ here means ‘universal’

Fairest Lord Jesus

LHS 152 CAL293

Schonster Herr Jesu

Anonymous, Munster, 1677

Tr. Joseph Augustus Seiss, 1873

Revised, Hymnal Compilers

54

Fairest Lord Jesus

1. Fairest Lord Jesus,

King of creation,

Son of God and Mary’s Son:

You will I cherish,

You will I honour,

You are my soul’s delight and crown.

55

Fairest Lord Jesus

2. Fair are the meadows,

Fair are the woodlands,

In the garb of verdant spring:

Jesus is fairer,

Jesus is purer;

He makes the saddest heart to sing.

56

Fairest Lord Jesus

3. Fair is the sunshine,

Fair is the moonlight,

Bright the stars that gem the sky:

Jesus shines brighter,

Jesus shines purer,

Than all the hosts of God on high.

57

Fairest Lord Jesus

4. Fairest Lord Jesus,

King of creation,

Son of God and Mary’s Son:

Glory and honour,

Praise, adoration,

Ever be Yours, and Yours alone.†

HymnWe sing :

Rock of ages cleft for me

LH330 CAL 293

Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778), alt.

60

Rock of ages cleft for me

1. Rock of ages cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in You;

Let the water and the blood,

From Your ruptured side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure:

Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

61

Rock of ages cleft for me

2. Not the labours of my hands

Can fulfil Your law’s demands;

Could my zeal no respite know,

Could my tears for ever flow,

All for sin could not atone:

You must save, and You alone.

62

Rock of ages cleft for me

3. Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Your cross I cling;

Naked, come to You for dress;

Helpless, look to You for grace;

Foul, I to the fountain fly;

Wash me, Saviour, or I die.

63

Rock of ages cleft for me

4. While I draw this fleeting breath,

When my eyelids close in death,

When I soar to worlds unknown,

See You on Your judgement throne:

Rock of ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in You.

64

Good Shepherd, C: guide and inspire us.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M: While we have a faith to sustain us; much love to nurture us, and a hope to draw us forward in confidence, there are many without faith, love or hope, and some who are planning suicide.

Good Shepherd, C: guide and inspire us.

69

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

God our holy Friend, please save your people.

Good Shepherd, C: guide and inspire us.

70

God our holy Friend, please save your people.

Good Shepherd, C: guide and inspire us.

71

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M: God of justice and compassion, we do not understand all the reasons why some must suffer while others live a comfortable existence, but we do know that you are on the side of health and happiness.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Please keep us on side with you, that in all our affairs our actions and words may mirror your generous mercy, truth and peace.

Through Christ Jesus our Saviour.C: Amen!
