CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: God tempts no one to sin,but he watches over us and keeps us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful self may not deceive us and draw us into false belief, despair and other great and shameful sins. And even though we are so tempted, yet through Christ we win the final victory.

(Small Catechism: Sixth Petition, adapted)

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

So, brothers and sisters in Christ: let us draw near to God our Father, to repent of our sins, and, in the name of the Lord Jesus, claim that victory in God's forgiveness.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin

And cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in

thought, word, and deed,By what we have doneAnd by what we have failed to do.»

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

We have not loved you with our whole heart,

And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.

We deserve your eternal punishment. »

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,

Have mercy on us.Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,

so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins?

C: I do.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God’s presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy?

C: I do.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name?

C: I do.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

We have not loved you with our whole heart,

And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.

We deserve your eternal punishment. »

FIRST READINGDeuteronomy 26:1-11 CEV

Thank-offering for the mighty acts of God

R: The first reading for the Second Sunday after Epiphany is written in Chapter 62 of Isaiah beginning at verse one.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 The LORD is giving you the land, and

soon you will conquer it, settle down, 2and plant crops.

And when you begin harvesting each of your crops, the very first things you pick must be put in a basket.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 Take them to the place where the

LORD your God chooses to be worshiped, 3and tell the priest,

"Long ago the LORD our God promised our ancestors that he would give us this land. And today, I thank him for keeping his promise and giving me a share of the land.”

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 4The priest will take the basket and set

it in front of the LORD'S altar. 5Then, standing there in front of the

place of worship, you must pray: My ancestor was homeless, an

Aramean who went to live in Egypt. There were only a few in his family then, but they became great and powerful, a nation of many people.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 6The Egyptians were cruel and had no

pity on us. They mistreated our people and forced us into slavery. 7We called out for help to you, the LORD God of our ancestors. You heard our cries; you knew we were in trouble and abused. 8Then you terrified the Egyptians with your mighty miracles and rescued us from Egypt.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 9You brought us here and gave us this

land rich with milk and honey. 10Now, LORD, I bring to you the best of the crops that you have given me.

After you say these things, place the basket in front of the LORD'S altar and bow down to worship him.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 11Then you and your family must

celebrate by eating a meal at the place of worship to thank the LORD your God for giving you such a good harvest.

And remember to invite the Levites and the foreigners who live in your town.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 91:1,2,9-16 CEV  R: The Psalm is Psalm 91

R: 1Live under the protection of God Most High and stay in the shadow of God All-Powerful.

C: 2Then you will say to the LORD, "You are my fortress, my place of safety; you are my God, and I trust you.”

Psalm 91:1,2,9-16 CEV  R: 9The LORD Most High is your

fortress. Run to him for safety, 10and no terrible disasters will strike you or your home.

C:11God will command his angels to protect you wherever you go.

Psalm 91:1,2,9-16 CEV  R:12They will carry you in their arms,

and you won't hurt your feet on the stones.

C:13You will overpower the strongest lions and the most deadly snakes.

Psalm 91:1,2,9-16 CEV  R:14The LORD says, "If you love me

and truly know who I am, I will rescue you and keep you safe.

C: 15When you are in trouble, call out to me. I will answer and be there to protect and honour you.

Psalm 91:1,2,9-16 CEV  R: 16You will live a long life and see my

saving power”.C: Glory to the Father, and the Son,

and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND READINGRomans 10:8b-13 CEV

The Christian confession: Jesus is Lord

R: The second reading for the first Sunday of Lent is written in Romans Chapter 10 beginning at verse 8.

Romans 10:8b-138All who are acceptable because of

their faith simply say, "The message is as near as your mouth or your heart." And this is the same message we preach about faith.

9So you will be saved, if you honestly say, "Jesus is Lord," and if you believe with all your heart that God raised him from death.

Romans 10:8b-1310God will accept you and save you, if

you truly believe this and tell it to others.

11The Scriptures say that no one who has faith will be disappointed, 12no matter if that person is a Jew or a Gentile.

Romans 10:8b-13There is only one Lord, and he is

generous to everyone who asks for his help.

13All who call out to the Lord will be saved.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL

Luke 4:1-13 CEVJesus tempted

M: The Holy Gospel is written in Luke

chapter 4 beginning at verse at verse one.

C: Glory to You O Lord

Luke 4:1-13

When Jesus returned from the Jordan River, the power of the Holy Spirit was with him, and the Spirit led him into the desert.   2For forty days Jesus was tested by the devil, and during that time he went without eating. When it was all over, he was hungry.

Luke 4:1-13

3The devil said to Jesus, "If you are God's Son, tell this stone to turn into bread.“

4Jesus answered, "The Scriptures say, 'No one can live only on food.’

Luke 4:1-13

5Then the devil led Jesus up to a high place and quickly showed him all the nations on earth.   6The devil said, "I will give all this power and glory to you.

It has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.   7Just worship me, and you can have it all.”

Luke 4:1-13

8Jesus answered, "The Scriptures say: Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’

Luke 4:1-13

9Finally, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem and had him stand on top of the temple. The devil said, "If you are God's Son, jump off.   10-11The Scriptures say: 'God will tell his angels to take care of you. They will catch you in their arms, and you will not hurt your feet on the stones.'

Luke 4:1-13

12Jesus answered, "The Scriptures also say, 'Don't try to test the Lord your God!' 13After the devil had finished testing Jesus in every way possible, he left him for a while.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You O Christ .

Saviour, when in dust to Thee

1. Saviour, when in dust to TheeLow we bow the adoring knee; When, repentant, to the skiesScarce we lift our weeping eyes:O by all Thy pains and woeSuffered once for man below,Bending from Thy throne on high,Hear our solemn litany.

Saviour, when in dust to Thee

3. By Thine hour of dire despair,By Thine agony of prayer,By the cross, the nail, the thorn,Piercing spear, and torturing scorn;By the gloom that veiled the skiesO’er the dreadful sacrifice:Listen to our humble cry,Hear our solemn litany.

Saviour, when in dust to Thee

4. By Thy deep expiring groan,By the sad sepulchral stone,By the vault, whose dark abodeHeld in vain the rising God:O from earth to heaven restored,Mighty, re-ascended Lord,Listen, listen to the cryOf our solemn litany. †
