A Message from the President
Another banner year was had by the CHJA in 2017! Our membershipcontinues to grow with lots of new members and an increase in theyounger members which bodes well for the future.
Our Medal Finals was greatly successful, and we were helped by many new committee members. It takes an army to keep these finalsrunning smoothly and we have one that worked tirelessly. My thanksand appreciation go out to all of those involved.
Our Scholarship Fund is in good order, also thanks to wonderful effortsof many people. It is a source of great pride that we can offer this helpto our members. We are constantly looking for people to help in ourfundraisers so please let us know if you are interested.
Every year I give my thanks to the wonderful board members who workhard to keep everything on an even keel and try to be responsive tomember’s wishes. We welcome any suggestions and spend time discussingthem at our meetings. Karen makes sure to keep us apprised on anynew items that may come up in between our meetings. Once again, Iask that anyone who has an idea that may benefit the membershipcome forward and email Karen who will forward it to the board or theappropriate person. Communication is very important.
I would like to say how proud I am to be your President. The CHJA is a wonderful organization that provides us with a great venue to enjoy our beloved sport. We are always looking for volunteers for our various committees. Please feel free to speak up and let us knowif you would like to join our greatgroup of people behind the scenes.
Please enjoy the evening of celebration of the accomplish-ments of our riders.
Carla Sharp, CHJA President

Karen AmedeoNothing gives me greater pleasure than naming Karenfor this award, for no one works harder for the CHJAthan she! For nearly 20 years, Karen has officiallymanaged myriad duties for us, from Treasurer, toMedal Finals Secretary, to Standards and ScholarshipCommittee member. That’s a lot, but for those of uswho work closely with her, this doesn’t begin tocover it. Behind the scenes, every single day, Karen isworking on something important – sometimes alone, sometimes with other Board members and volunteers– all of which keeps the CHJA running smoothly.
Here’s a short list of what she might do in any givenday: Want to see your point standings? Karen justupdated it. Want to make sure your membership isup to date? Karen can help. Enjoying this lovely program and the Medal Finals keepsake program?Karen managed it. Need an update on the website?Karen will do it. Need to survey trainers about arule change? Karen will send it out. Wondering if you paid for that show application orsponsorship? Karen will follow up. Areyou entered in the Medal Finals? Karenknows. Amazed at the website upgradesthat make it easy to apply for shows?Karen spearheaded that. Looking forFacebook updates? Karen will post it.
And for us on the Board, Karen is aresource, a history keeper, a nudge, atireless supporter, a statistician, a ruleenforcer, a cheerleader…but most of all, afriend. We truly could not do it without you.
Sportsmanship Award
JULIA COTTER MEMORIAL TROPHY
Donated by Hugh Kerrigan & The Farmington Polo Club
This award is presented annually to anAmateur or Junior member whose characterbest exemplifies the qualities of decency, fair play, and graciousness in victory or defeat.
Isabel Rudaz“Isabel is a role model to her peers. She willalways happily lend a hand whether it’s putting aschool pony away, helping a friend bathe theirhorse or pony, setting jumps and courses, takingon extra duties on the FCHC Junior RidingCommittee or riding extra horses.
For the past two years, Isabel has been organizinghorsemanship question and answer practice sessions for the Fairfield riders ahead of the horse-manship tests administered during the FairfieldJune Benefit Horse and CHJA Finals. Before horseshows she will even gather our riders for a tackcleaning session! And if that isn’t enough Isabelwill also help the little kids learn their courses, and will patiently teach them how to tack upponies, groom and basic horse care.
Although she has faced challenges and setbacks in her own riding career she maintains a positive attitude and is always willing to help anyone!”
The Officers, Board of Directors and the entire CHJA membership congratulate you on your selection for the 2017 Sportsmanship Award!

Career Achievement Award
Card PartyJane Dow Burt, Westbrook Hunt Club
Originally purchased as a two and a half year old in Germany, “Dino” started making waves almostas soon as he reached our shores, earning secondplace as a three year old in a large Hunter Breedingclass at Devon. Having established his beauty, the next step was performance! And his resultsconfirmed his talents were more than skin deep.
Over his career, Dino won many year end awardsin multiple Hunter divisions, in both the CHJAand Zone 1 – Pre-Green, Green, Regular Working, and Junior! He also was frequently spotted in thewinner’s circle of many Hunter Derbies.
He was the mount for several inexperienced ridersas they debuted in the Junior Hunter division. Dinowas such an uncomplicated ride, that a champi-onship first time out was a common occurrence.
And not only was he good, he was incrediblyversatile; in 2016 at the CHJA Medal Finals, his three different riders won the AdultMedal Final, got third in the JuniorMedal Finals, and placed sixth in theModified Adult Finals!
Dino’s talents are probably best summedup by a professional who had thepleasure of showing him- “he was themost polite horse I’ve ever ridden.”
Thank you, Dino, for your years of success. You are truly an ultimate gentleman!

Heaven Bound Award
London FogHolly Rebello, Hidden Brook Stables
This year we lost one of our favorite competitors. As the very first recipient of our Career AchievementAward, it is only fitting that London Fog ended hiscareer as the recipient of the Heaven Bound Award.
“Austin” was known for his winning presence inthe Adult Hunter, Amateur Owner Hunter andAdult Equitation divisions. But competing in Finalswas his specialty. Austin took over twenty ridersinto the winner’s circle at the New England, Ariat,M&S and CHJA Finals. The “little grey horse thatcould” won many Equitation and Hunter Finalsmultiple times with different riders! He loved goinginto the ring and showing everyone how it’s done.He would always do his job but never waitedaround for the fan fair and pictures. His famoustrips into the winner’s circle were affectionatelycalled “driveby!”
London Fog won three Lifetime Achievementawards including the NEEC Nicolas Award, and both the CHJA and CHSA CareerAchievement Awards. He was still competing at the age of 27 and stillshowing us how it was done. LondonFog was truly a horse of a lifetime and tonight we honor him.
“You need look no farther than your heart to find me.”
