Dear People of Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony Parish:
“This is my body.”
(Mark 14:22)
It is all coming together. With the exams over, the last day or two of school is pretty much packing up and celebrating all that has been accomplished. They are days to stop, gather everything up, and give thanks…. Before moving on.
Last week we congratulated graduating seniors, this week we can congratulate all the others who have worked all year, grown tremendously, and now move on to new grades and even new schools. Though out of school, I feel very much like a student gathering things up before moving on.
Months of planning are finally all coming together this week as St. Anthony’s begins its Church renovation this Monday and St. Mary’s its new parking lot on Tuesday. Chuck Rueth said he has been getting a good response to the request for help. This Monday only a few are needed to remove the front three pews and peel back a little carpet so Greg Miller can begin the framing up of the extended sanctuary floor. But next Sunday after the 10:30am Mass, we are hoping for 40 volunteers to remove pews, carry them to the multi-purpose room, then remove the carpet and scrape the floor. Bring your tools and a friend!!!
At St. Mary’s, it is machinery that will be doing the heavy work. Ken Smith and son-in-law Tim Raese are donating time and equipment to do the removal of the old black top, fill and breaker. They will begin on Tuesday as soon as school is over. They are hoping to be able to break the old material up and lay it down as fill for the new lot saving Bugar Trucking from having to supply as much. All is being timed for the third week of June so as to take advantage of American Asphalt having their equipment still set up in Neillsville saving thousands of dollars on trucking expenses.
Along with carpet and blacktop, ministries are also coming together. This week will be the last time I gather with the team from around Thorp Deanery to plan our fourth annual Deanery Convocation. Each year they seem to get better and better and this September 5th will certainly top all others. Sr. Marlene Weisenbech will be coming from LaCrosse to keynote the evening by bringing us up to date on the issue we are hearing so much about: human trafficking. Fr. Tim Oudenhoven will be doing a breakout on the impact changing enforcement of immigration laws is having on our Hispanic neighbors. Moira Kneer will use her wisdom, humor and experience to nurture those who find themselves in the role of caregiver to a family member. Fr. Steve Brice will do a workshop on the state of unity among Christians in this 500th anniversary year of our becoming divided. It will be tough to pick two from the 9 workshops being offered. So save the date!
The relationships between our three parishes are also “coming together” as exemplified by this week’s Sacred Worship committee meeting. They will be finalizing the schedules for this coming Christmas and Easter. We are moving toward schedules that one priest can manage and encouraging people to think of all three church buildings as “their parish.” We’ll let you know what the Spirit says!
Another gathering up before moving on takes place next Sunday afternoon. The annual RCIA reunion picnic is taking place at 4:30pm at the Loyal Legion park. Everyone who has been involved in RICA, whether as a candidate, a sponsor, or a team member, is invited to gather for a potluck meal and to share what God has done and is doing in their lives.
The only thing that isn’t “coming together” at this point is the Annual Diocesan Appeal. In all three parishes we are about two thirds paid and one third short. I contributed $600.00 to the appeal in the fall. I am giving an additional $200.00, another third, this week. I share that in hopes that others will be moved to do the same. After June 30th, the shortfall becomes interest bearing debt.
At the last supper, Jesus made clear that on Good Friday he was giving himself away as food in the desire that through our taking in the gift we would be changed into one body…. His body. Ever since that night, slowly, in many small ways, it has all been coming together.
Fr. Steve
