Welcome to Port Douglas… Far North Queensland

Not too “Beautiful one day”…

Not so “Perfect the next”.

Four Mile Beach

You can see how it gets its name.

A pile of coconuts collected from the beach palmsSome have even started to sprout

This house by the beach is surrounded by luscious vegetation

Did I say the vegetation was luscious..?

We stayed at the BreakFree Reef Club Resort

A picturesque oasis of a place

that makes the most of the vegetation.

Very romantic at night.

The view from the balcony of our self contained 2 bedroom

unit

The garden BBQ area allowed us to have a luxury holiday without breaking the bank!

Bustling Macrossan Street is the centre strip of shops and restaurants

Restaurants that obviously cater for the tourist trade

but overdo the caricature and kitsch

At the end of Macrossan Street is the Courthouse Hotel,

a typical Ozzie Pub,

that has just undergone an $18million revamp, with shops and accommodation.

From the pub verandah the boats that visit the reef can be seen leaving the harbour.

Looking across Wharf Street from the Courthouse Hotel to the Police Station and the old Courthouse which is the only old building (dating from 1879) to survive a devastating cyclone that struck in 1911.

At the Cenotaph, Lest We

Forget

that small towns everywhere contributed to the Fallen.

This church may seem like it has been here forever but it has an interesting history. It was originally built elsewhere in 1880. It was destroyed in the cyclone and rebuilt in 1911, then relocated to this location in 1988 and restored 1989
