Why we organised tonight?
• Refresh your memory on WACE requirements and the ATAR• Make sure parents know of the study requirements needed
for a successful year 11• As parents you are in the best position to reinforce good
habits at home• Positive change is more likely to occur if partnerships are
formed that involve the school and home• We want you to encourage your child to establish a good
work ethic and study habits which will ensure a successful year 11 and 12
What is the WACE?
• Western Australian Certificate of Education• All year 11’s are working towards achieving a
WACE
Achieving the WACE
• Complete a minimum of 20 course units or equivalents
• One pair from list A ( English / Arts/ languages /social sciences)
• One pair from list B ( Mathematics/ Science /technology)
• Meet English Competency standards by achieving a C grade in any Stage 1 or higher English course unit.
• Achieve a C average or better across 16 course units of which 8 must be at year 12 level

• All Year 11 Stage 2 and 3 courses will be examined internally • Some stage 1 English and mathematics courses will also have
exams
• The end of year exam usually covers the whole years work. Some stage 1 courses such as English and Maths may have exams.

To be considered for university admission as a school leaver an applicant must achieve:
• WACE• competence in English • a high enough ATAR for the selected course• any prerequisites or special requirements of a
particular course i.e. folio, performance or interview
What is an ATAR and who gets one?
An ATAR is a tertiary entrance ranking which is used to rank students between 99.5 and zero
It is used to determine who gets university placements
Only students who have 4 or more stage 2 and 3 courses in Year 12 will get an ATAR
DETERMINING THE ATAR
Is as follows:
• TEA is the total of the best 4 scaled scores (score out of 400)
• TEA converted to ATAR.• Unacceptable combinations cannot be used e.g. ( Biology/Human Biology)• Stage 3 results will be increased by 15 marks relative
to Stage 2 results.• Maths 10 marks per stage.

• For students who do not have 4 stage 2 or 3 courses

Goal Setting• Having goals and being motivated go hand in hand
• Encouraging your child to have goals for year 11 may improve their performance
• Goals should be SMART– Specific– Measurable– Achievable– Realistic– Time bound
Goal Setting Action Plan
• Goal – To my maths grade from a C to a B• Time frame – Semester 1• Strategies for achieving that goal– Listen more carefully in class– Ask for help when I don’t understand– Do 20 minutes practise problems each day– Don’t leave study until the night before the test

Homework Diaries
• Should be used to write down homework, assignment due dates, test dates and things to remember
• Encourage your child to use them and check them regularly
• They can be used to make ‘to do lists’ once at home• Proper use will help students to set priorities for
homework and study• Make sure they don’t just look at tomorrow. They
need to look forward and plan how to cope with busy times
Study Timetables• Students should be doing about 12-15 hours per week if
they are working towards an ATAR ( more in the lead up to exams)
• Students not working towards an ATAR may need 6 -10 hours depending on the number of stage 2/3 courses
• Encourage your child to draw up a study timetable and stick to it
• Students may need to draw up a new one each week if their routine varies
• This timetable should include a time each week which is revision of old work not current work
• The plan should be realistic and sustainable• The idea is if they work hard in the quiet weeks they will
cope better with the busy weeks
• Spread times over the week don’t leave it all until weekends
• Plan breaks ( they actually help their effectiveness)• Encourage them to harder subjects first when they are
fresher• They should use all the time allocated, Don’t stop once
tomorrows homework is done• Help them plan to minimise disruptions• Any time not taken up on homework should be spent
on study

But I don’t have any homework!• Organise files• Daily Review of each subject that Day• Start assignments that may not be due for
several weeks• Study ! ( The idea is that you start preparing for
tests as soon as the topic starts)• In year 11 ATAR courses 50% of the grade is
usually based on exam performance. If they neglect the revision they are neglecting the thing that can have the biggest impact on their grades.
What to do in the study bit?
• Encourage them a goal for the available time. This enables them to have a sense of achievement and focuses their study
• They should be doing something active not just flicking through their file or text book and reading
• Encourage your child to test their learning ( you can help with this if they will let you)
• Encourage them to evaluate their study. Did the method work? If not try a different study technique next time they have similar work to learn
Examples of Active Learning
• Brainstorming without looking• Organising information into tables• Making a mind map• Making vocab cards and testing yourself with
them ( colour code notes to help with these)• Making up a mnemonic• Getting a quiz from a family member• Making summary notes• Practising past exam and test papers
What Can Parents do?
• Encourage students to stick to a study plan ( Sometimes they need you to say no!)
• Help your child to set goals and come up with action plans which will help them achieve their goals
• Be a study coach• Help your child feel comfortable with wins and losses• Minimise distractions• Make sure that they get a healthy balance between
work, play• Make sure they have a good sleep routine
