NEWSLETTER SUMMER2012The Parkstone Dental Practice

Welcome to our Newsletter of 2012Welcome, once again to our Summer Newsletter! We are very excited to announce that The Parkstone Dental Practice is celebrating its 10th year of practice. In recognition of this we will be holding a free prize draw at the practice. This edition we are focusing on the importance of educating our patients. We believe it is important for our patients to understand clearly the reasons why treatment is required and how to prevent it in the future. Happy reading from our team!

Over the last 10 years Mr and Mrs Edwards has watched their practice grow from strength to strength and have experienced many changes along the way. From structural changes, technical advances in dental procedures to incorporating the latest ideas of the best treatment strategies.

We would like to thank our patients for their long standing support. The Parkstone Dental Practice are offering patients the opportunity to win lots of great prizes at our free prize draw event which will be held on Wednesday 27th March 2013 at the practice from 3:30-5:00pm. Prizes include ‘In surgery teeth whitening’, ‘Electric tooth brush’ and more! Hope you can come along - have a drink on us!

Terms and conditions will apply, see details at reception. Celebrating

Mrs Bettley-Smith joined us in June of this year to work Wednesdays and Thursdays at the practice. She will be treating both Mr & Mrs Edwards patients. Gemma qualified as a dentist in 1996 and her previous patients have described her as a ‘gentle’ dentist. She lives locally with her GP husband and two children. In her spare time Gemma goes to the gym and enjoys family cycle rides.

We welcome a new Dentist to the practice

Seeing is BelievingHere at The Parkstone Dental Practice we have had extra TV screens fitted in each surgery to make discussing treatment plans easier and more convenient. The new screens at desk level will enable both dentist and patient to view and discuss x-rays and photos. Shortly all X-rays will be taken digitally at the practice which means you will be exposed to even less radiation and able to instantly view results for the dentist to diagnose and discuss with you. Also images of your teeth and gums can be used to educate you about your dental health helping to prevent problems in the future.

Screens fitted on the ceiling are there for your pleasure and comfort. Sit back and enjoy watching a TV programme of your choice during your long appointment.

Other sources of educating our patients include:

• Slideshowpresentationinthewaitingarea

• Bookofsmiles(copiesinwaitingareaandeachsurgery)

• Educationalvideosshownoftreatmentproceduresin surgery

• Intra–oralcamera(toshowactualimagestakeninside your mouth)

HEALTH & ADVICE

1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, two minutes is recommended.

2. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride to help prevent cavities.

3. Consider using an electric toothbrush especially if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.

4. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle against your teeth and brush with small circular motions. Remember to brush all surfaces including the inside.

5. Invest in a new toothbrush or replacement electric tooth brush head every 2-3 months or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

6. Cleaning between the teeth at least once a day is important as it removes food and plaque from between the teeth where even the best toothbrush can be ineffective.

7. Brush your tongue as well as your teeth to help eliminate mouth-borne bacteria and to keep your mouth and breath fresh.

8. Always wait 30-40 minutes before you brush your teeth after eating or drinking acidic food or drink, such as oranges, as this can erode the enamel on your teeth.

9. Avoid eating too much sugar and drinking sugary drinks such as fizzy drinks, sweetened tea, or fruit juices particularly inbetween meals.

10. Make sure you visit your dentist for a full oral health check every six months and a hygienist visit to look after your teeth and gums. Prevention is better than cure!

11. If you have a tooth ache, it is important to seek dental care immediately as this could be a potential infection or abscess.

12. Teach your children good oral health techniques from an early age; it’s important they get into good habits.

12 Tips for better oral health

NEW - NOW OFFERING Dental SedationSedation is a technique to reduce your anxiety and minimise any discomfort during your dental treatment whilst keeping you conscious at all times.

Your sedation will be administered by a local Consultant Anaesthetist who will remain with you throughout.

This technique maybe useful for those patients undergoing long appointments such as implant placements or cosmetic smile lifts. Discuss with your dentist any questions you may have at your next visit if you think this may be of benefit to you.
