Class Guidelines

• Drop off your bookbag, purse and cellphone on the main counter.

• Get your music and pencil.• Have a seat after you spit out your gum.• Be prepared to begin when the bell rings.• Stay focused and be positive.• Respect others.• Use the restroom during the class change.

Syllabus for Concert Choir and Chorus

• This course will provide students with the opportunity to sing a variety of choral selections in a stylistically accurate manner.

• This will be accomplished through sightreading the music rather than learning by rote.

• Students will vocalize to learn how to sing with a proper choral tone.

• Students will learn to sing parts (sop., alto, tenor, bass)

• Students will study the background/history of the music being sung.

Student Expectations

• Be able to read choral music by understanding pitch, rhythm, harmony, and dynamics.

• Be able to blend within their own individual sections and within the entire choir.

• Perform for schoolwide, countywide, statewide, and national functions.

• Memorize the music.• Understand the historical context of the music

Types of Music

• Traditional sacred choral music • Traditional secular choral music• Show music which involves singing and

dancing. • Think “Glee.”

IMPORTANT

Supporting one another and working successfully within the group are important aspects of this class!!!!!

Grading Information

Students will be graded on:• Class Participation• Performances• Theory• Sightsinging• Group Dynamics• Final Exam (Choral Concert) – 25%

• Monday, August 22, 29, 12, 19 – 7:00-8:00 Honors Choir Audition Practice

• Saturday, August 27 – 9:00-12:00 Honors Choir Workshop at UNCG

• Friday, September 23 – Honors Choir Audition at UNCG

• Saturday , November 12 and Sunday, November 13 – Honors Choir

State Events

• All-State Rehearsal – January 5 from 5 until 8 at Northwest High School in Guilford County. The snow date is January 10

• All-State Chorus is the last weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in January.

• Solo and large ensemble contest – March 13 through March 16

Music Boosters Meetings – our parent support organization

• Tuesday, September 6 – 6:00 p.m.• Tuesday, October 4 – 6:00 p.m.• Tuesday, November – TBA• Tuesday, January 10 – 6:00 p.m.• Tuesday, February 17 – 6:00 p.m.• Tuesday, April 17 – 6:00 p.m.• Dues are $5.00 per family per year
