Welcome to Highlands Middle

School Library

Library Orientation Program

LibrarianDr. Sandra Reidmiller

Before you open a book, let’s find out

how the library works!!!

The library offers many resources to help you

succeed. You just need to learn where to find

them.This program will give

you an overview of what is available in the

Highlands Middle School Library and

where to locate those resources.

Dr. Reidmiller is the Library Media Specialist

and is always glad to help students locate and

use library materials.

Computers are available throughout the library to look up books in Destiny and to use for reference

and research.

The objectives of this lesson are to:•Log into Follett Destiny•Find a book in Destiny•Complete an OPAC search for an author, title, or subject•Identify online databases that will help students with research

How to Find a Book in Destiny

• Log into a library computer•Go to

goldenrams.com•Click on the link for Destiny in the brown

bar on the left•Click on the link for

the middle school

You should see a screen that looks like this.

Click on the tab which reads Highlands Middle on the

upper left hand corner of the page.

You will see a screen that looks like this. You can enter

a search term in the box.

You can search by keyword, title, author, subject, or

series.

Practice:

Make sure that Highlands Middle

shows you are searching in the Highlands Middle

School Library. You can set limiters when searching as needed.

If you know the title of a book and want to look it up you can enter the title in the Find box. We are using Fever, 1793 as

an example.

It does not matter if you use lower or uppercase

letters. Searches are not case sensitive. For

example, searches for give yourself goosebumps, Give YourSelf GooseBumpS, and

GIVE YOURSELF GOOSEBUMPS will all

return the same results.

Destiny ignores certain words, called stop words, in search terms. If you need to include

stop words in your search term, switch to the Power tab, enter the term with the stop

words, and select "Starts with". If the title begins with an "A"

that isn't a leading article, such as "A, my name is Ami" or "A is

for America," put quotation marks around the title.

Destiny ignores the punctuation in a search term. If your search term

includes words separated by a punctuation mark such as a

dash, double-dash, hyphen, or slash, leave it out. When you leave it out, don't replace the

punctuation mark with a space.

For example, if you're trying to find Camp Ghost-Away, enter camp ghostaway. If you're trying to find

Katie.com, enter katiecom.

After typing in the name of the title, you will click on the Title

button above.

You will now see a screen that has a list of titles with the terms included. You can click on the book title details to get more

information.

On this screen you can find out many things about the book. You can see a picture of the

cover of the book. You can read a summary of the book to see if

it is what you are looking for.

You can find out how many copies of the book the library

owns and if any of these copies is available for check out. You can find the call number of the book so that you can locate it

easily in the library.

The call number for this book is FIC AND. The letters FIC in the call number tell you that the

book is a fiction book and it is located in the fiction section of

the library.

The AND in the call number tells you that the book was written by an author whose last name begins with these letters. The

last name of this author is Anderson.

You are now

ready to find the book on

the library

shelves.

Practice #1:Using the Destiny program search for the book Catalyst using the title tab.Click on the correct answer.

1. Find the author of the book Catalyst. Is it…

A. Laurie AndersonB. Ann DevlinC. Amy Wertz

That is incorrect. Please try again.

Let’s say that after reading Fever, 1793

you would like to read other books written by Laurie Halse Anderson.

You can complete an author search to find out if our library has additional titles by a

particular author.

You can type in the author’s name starting with the last

name first. Then you will click on the Author button.

Now we see a screen with a list of all the books written by that author that are located in the

Highlands Middle School Library. If we click on the details button of the one we are interested in we can find

information about that book.

Here are the details for the book Chains which was also written

by author Laurie Halse Anderson.

We can see a picture of the cover of the book and if any

copies are available at this time. We can identify the call number

to find the book on the library shelves.

Practice #2:Practice completing an author search. What did author Meish Goldish write? Remember to search using the author’s last name first.Click on the correct answer.

2. What is the title of the book written by Judith Presnall?A. It’s a Dog’s Life B. Hollywood Dogs C. Hotel for Dogs

What do you do if you do not know the exact

title of the book you are looking for? Let’s say you are assigned

the topic of pollution to research. You can

complete a subject search to see what is

available on this particular topic.

You will type in the word pollution in the Find box. Next you will click on the

subject box above.

If you misspell a search word, or Destiny cannot find your word, Destiny asks you, Did you mean...?. If Destiny's

word is correct—if it's the word you want—click the word to

see the search results. If not, click Refine your search and try

again. Example:

If you type dinasors, Destiny asks you, Did you mean

"dinosaurs"?Click dinosaurs if that's the word you meant to enter.

If not, click Refine your search and try again.

We see a list of 17 books about pollution which can be located in the

Highlands Middle School Library.

We think that the book title Managing Toxic Wastes might work

for our needs, so we click on the details button for that title.

We see that the library has one copy of the book and that it is

available. The call number for this book is 363.728 K. We know that this a Dewey Decimal number and that

we will find this book in the nonfiction section of the library.

We locate the 300 section of nonfiction

and locate the specific call number of 363.728 K.

This is the Dewey Number for Social

Science. We can find the particular book we

need.

Click on the call number for each of the nonfiction library books below to put them on

the shelves in the correct order. Can you guess how

they will go?

What if my Search Results list is too

long? How do I find fewer titles?

If your Search Results list is too large, refine your search, using a more exact term. By default, Destiny only returns things that

include all your words.

Tips: •If you use more words, you'll get fewer results. Use North American birds rather than just birds. •Be as specific as you can be. Use marine biology rather than science. •Put NOT (in capital letters) in front of each word that you don't want. For example, pets NOT cats NOT birds will give you titles about pets—all kinds of pets except for cats and birds. •If the Search Results list is still too long, or doesn't contain what you want, try the Power search.

What if my Search Results list is too short? How do I

find more titles? If you get too few results, refine your search using some of these

methods:•Use a more general term. For example, use history or war rather than Spanish-American war. •Try adding similar words with OR (in capital letters) in front of each. For example, cars OR autos OR automobiles. •Try using a similar or related word. For example, if biosphere produces no results, try entering atmosphere, or biology, or even life.

Practice #3:Practice completing a subject search on the subject Koalas.Click on the correct answer.

3. When you enter the subject Koalas you find one book titled…A. Kangaroos and KoalasB. Koalas C. Koala Bears
