Amir Hussain, 36, of aremote Waghama village, inSouth Kashmir, was studying in2nd Standard, when he lost hisboth arms to the blade of amachine at his father's bat man-ufacturing factory in 1997. Mostof his flesh was taken apart fromhis shoulders and arms by themachine.

With Sachin Tendulkar as hisrole model, Amir's unique wayof holding his bat is catchingattention of everybody who seeshim playing. Besides, he bowlsleg breaks by holding the cricketball in his toe and finger.

Not letting his disability tohinder his dream of becoming acricketer, Amir Hussain, didhold his nerves and worked withenthusiasm to train himself as acricketer. With the aim to playcricket, he started writing, eatingfood, bathing and other dailyactivities too with his foot.

Amir's story is full of strug-gle for existence and fightagainst society that looks downupon the disabled and instead ofencouraging discourages them.He is courage personified asdespite all odds, he never gaveup and is today a role model formany disabled in Kashmir.

Rameez Raja, Amir's brother, wrapped him in a tarpaulin andtook him on his shoulder andcried for help. "I knocked everydoor on way but everyone wasscared to see the blood. No onehelped me. A woman went to anearby army camp and got anambulance and we took him toSrinagar for treatment", he said.Amir was operated upon in Boneand Joints hospital, Srinagarwhere his arms were cut. Hespent next three years in varioushospitals before returning home."When I was brought home, neighbours suggested my par-ents to eliminate me", said Amir.

However, Amir's parentsmade it a point that their sonmakes a mark in his life. "I hadto sell major portion of my agri-culture land and sawmill to makesure that my son is treated well. Ieven took loan from bank", saidBashir Ahmad Lone, Amir'sfather.

"We wanted to divert hismind from the tragedy and sent

him to school," said Raja, hisbrother. "At school, the kidswould taunt him and the ironywas teachers were reluctant toteach him. They would oftenadvice him not to waste time andsit at home. But Amir's stoicnature and dedication helpedhim to stay there and learn", hesaid.

As his quest for knowledgeincreased, Amir looked for aninnovative ways to pursue it. Hetrained himself to write with hisfoot. "Initially I found it veryhard to write with the foot but Ihad no other option. I wanted toprove myself," Amir said.

Amir became his own mas-ter. He would struggle a lot indoing routine work like going totoilet, combing his hair, puttingup his clothes. But he refusedany help from friends or familymembers. "It took me two yearsto learn all things myself. Now Ido thing easily without anyone'shelp," Amir says proudly.

Despite difficulties, Amirpassed his class 10th and 12thexamination. He took every dif-ficulty he faced in life as chal-lenge. He learnt swimming fromducks. He took inspiration fromSachin Tendulkar to becomecricketer and from M F Hussainto become a painter.

Amir's talent caught the eyesof experts when he joined theDegree College Bijbehara andthere he stunned everyone withhis precision. "Everyone wasstunned to see me playing crick-et in college. Within few minuteseveryone was applauding meand I became an icon in DegreeCollege Bijbehara," Amir said.
