What is a primary source?

Primary sources are the raw materials of history — original documents and objects which were created at the time under study. They are different from secondary sources, accounts or interpretations of events created by someone without firsthand experience.

Historical primary sources

How can we learn how people in the past lived?

What evidence did they leave?

April 14th 1/2 past 10 o'clock P.M.O, fatal day. O, noble Victim. Treason has done its worst. The President has been Assassinated. It has just been announced at my door that he was shot a half hour ago at Fords Theatre. Is it possible? I have just come from near the scene, it is too True. 11 o'clock P.M.

What are some current primary sources?

How do we record our thoughts? How do we tell our stories to each

other? How do we correspond with each

other? What evidence will we leave for future

study?

What should be saved? Why?

Why archive and save Web sites?

"I knew that websites changed periodically, but I didn't realize that once they are changed, they can never be viewed as they once were unless we archive them"
