Evacuation Organised movement of children and the vulnerable from towns and cities to safe zones.
1. 1.9 million children left their city homes for a life in the country, where they were safe.
2. Some children were separated from their brothers or sisters when they were chosen by the host families.
3. The host families received a weekly payment for taking in children. This was usually spent on evacuee children.
4. Some children never saw their parents again as their parents were killed during the war.
5. Some children were made to work as servants by the host families.
6. Some children learnt new skills and didn’t return to city life because they preferred life in the countryside.
