LESSON PLANSUBJECT: Mathematical Literacy GRADE: 12
SCHOOL: …………………………………… TEACHER: Claire Trader; Sheetal Navsaria; Olivia Posthumus
DURATION: 1 lesson CLASS CONTACT TIME: 55 minutes DATE: September 2015
SUBJECT FIELD / TOPIC / SPECIFIC OUTCOME:TOPIC: Probability – Tree diagrams
LEARNING OUTCOMES The learners will be able to:
1. Critically analyse and interpret situations involving probability or chance.2. Interpret and understand the probability range scale.3. Express probability of an event in the form of fractions, percentages and decimal notation.4. Differentiate between relative frequency and theoretical probability.5. Distinguish between an event and an outcome in terms of probability.6. Recognise that expressions of probability are predictions of the future based on events of the past.7. Recognise that expressions of probability only predict the outcome trend over a large period of time and cannot accurately predict the
outcome of single events.8. Determine when the outcome of one event will impact on the outcome of another and when it will not.9. Identify possible outcomes for compound events using tree diagrams and two-way tables.
INTERGRATION WITH OTHER SUBJECTS: Life Orientation – ethics and values. Languages – reading and comprehending scenarios. Mathematics – calculations.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Probability – relative frequency (learnt in Grade 8 - 11).
General knowledge on different scenarios/situations related to chance and probability of event occurring.TEXTBOOK USED:Olivier, S & Fourie, D.. 2013. Spot On Mathematical Literacy Grade 12 Learner's Book [CAPS]. South Africa: Heinemann Educational Publishers.EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
Revision exercise: Term 3 Question 9 - 11 pg. 286-287 Via Afrika Mathematical Literacy Grade 12 Learner’s Book pg. 270-279
EXPANDED OPPORTUNITIES: Read the weather forecast and ask the class what is the probability or chance that it will rain or the sun will shine according to the forecast
shown in the newspaper. Obtain an old lotto ticket and determine the probability of winning or losing in the national lottery jackpot. Have a jar of astros or smarties and ask the learners what is the probability or chance of selecting a specific colour.

PRESENTATION PHASEUse direct instruction to introduce the class to unit 3 - representations for determining possible outcomes. Show the class the compound events in terms of a tree diagram and a two way table and how they apply to real life situations.
Listen attentively to the teacher’s lesson and ask questions as well as making own summary notes.

CLASSWORK PHASEUse direct instruction to explain the content in the PowerPoint as well as the examples in the textbook, by pointing out the important facts in each example about the tree diagram.
Work with the teacher to understand the examples provided and ask questions when uncertain on content.
