• Biggest development was synthetic rubber– Japan cut off American supply in South Pacific

Atomic Bomb

• Using Uranium – “gun” type bomb• Fat Man – Nagasaki• Little Boy - Hiroshima• Nuclear bomb exploded 1900 feet above city• Shock wave greater than speed of sound• Temp reached 7200°F• Fuel to spread fire was houses, buildings, cars• Radiation effect survivors and children in utero

Bomb Decisions• Manhattan Project started under FDR• FDR died in 1945 and Truman became Pres• Truman didn’t know anything about bomb• Two choices– Invade mainland Japan– Drop bomb

• Estimated save 500,000 + US lives by dropping bomb

• Truman didn’t like using the bomb even though it was final decision
