The Hudson Valley Renegades have been taking theirfans on a roller coaster ride as the mid-point of the seasonarrives.
This past week alone the Renegades played sevengames in seven days and accumulated a 3-4 record. Afterlosing two games to the Tri-City ValleyCats, the ’Gadesbounced back at home with a 4-3 victory. GrandenGoetzman smacked his team-leading fourth triple in thefirst inning. He would later be knocked in by JamesHarris’ fielder’s choice groundout to short. That gave theRenegades an early spark toward victory.
The ’Gades got their second run in the fourth fromanother fielder’s choice groundout to short by Harris.They scored the third and fourth runs in the bottom of theeighth. Great pitching from the arm of Kevin Brandthelped the Renegades maintain the lead and allowedBrandt to pickup his third straight win, moving his recordto 4-2.
The Renegades were at it again at home the followingnight. This tim, it was all Tri-City. A pitchers duel betweenTri-City’s Chris Cotton and Hudson Valley’s Chris Kircshthrough four innings at the Dutch was broken wide openin the top of the fifth. Kirsch gave up a leadoff single tothe ValleyCats’ Brett Booth and it was all downhill fromthere. Back-to-back errors opened the floodgates for theValleyCats as they went on to score four runs in the fifth.The four runs were not charged to Kirsch because of the
two errors. However, they were the only runs of the gameas the ValleyCats defeated the Renegades, 4-0.
The final game of the Tri-City series concluded onThursday night back at the Dutch. Aaron Griffin was on thehill for the Renegades and was lights out. Griffin pitched
six scoreless innings, striking out seven. He would onlyallow three hits before he turned the ball over to RickTeasley. It wasn’t easy being Teasley that Thursday night.After eight and one third scoreless innings, one swingchanged everything. Teasley would give up a solo home run
to John Kemmer in the top of the ninth, which proved to bethe ballgame. The ‘Gades went down without a fight, 1-0.
That loss concluded the Tri-City series. The ’Gadeswere back at divisional play on Friday night. They took onthe Aberdeen IrionBirds in front of a capacity crowd onfireworks night. Like fireworks, the Renegades’ offensewas explosive in the early innings. Two runs came aroundin the second inning and one more in the fifth. Ben Grisettossed six innings and had had seven Ks. That was enoughto get the W and put the Renegades two-and-a-half gamesahead of the IronBirds in the McNamara Division with a3-1 win.
The ’Gades appeared to have the IrionBirds number asthey swept the birds in this two-game series with a 4-3 winon Saturday. Again, the Renegades jumped out early, scor-ing three runs in the second and another one in the third.Jamie Schultz faced the minimum through four. ColtonRevis got hit around and left a bases-loaded jam forAndrew Hanse. Hanse was able to bail out Revis and keepthe 4-0 lead intact. Justin Choate then tried his hand on themound and he made the game very interesting. Allowing arun in the seventh, eighth and ninth the Ironbirds mounteda small comeback. Fortunately for the ‘Gades, theIronBirds flew short of wining.
The Renegades will have no time to rest as they are inthe midst of a six-game homestand, that started Tuesday.The ‘Gades will be taking on the Vermont Lake MonstersJuly 31-August 1. They will then face the AuburnDoubledays August 2 – 4.
