Chairman’s Message
It gives me immense pleasure to introduce you to the students of 38th batch of Institute of Rural Management Institute (IRMA). IRMA was set up by the visionary, Dr. Verghese Kurien, in 1979 to create a new breed of professional rural managers who are transformative in their approach with focus on sustainability and equity. Having gone through the rigorous academic and field assignments, these students are now ready to enter into the world of working professionals.
IRMA’s unique curriculum and culture has developed a sense of responsibility in every student towards the society at large by enabling them to experience and understand the village level realities through extensive field work in rural areas as well as practice skills in a real-life context through internships. Over the last 38 years, more than 3000 students have graduated from IRMA who have remained committed to its mission while contributing immensely towards organisational goals.
IRMA has always been responsive to the evolving socio-economic environment and has strived to impart required skills to the students so that they adapt and contribute in a more meaningful manner. Here at IRMA, the students are trained to contribute to their organisations keeping in mind the interests of society at large. While perusing the brochure you will get glimpses of many such initiatives of IRMA.
I thank you for your support to IRMA over the years to help it emerge as the leading rural management institute in the country. Director’s Message
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”- Mahatma Gandhi
It was this simple maxim by the Father of the Nation that drove Dr. Verghese Kurien to envision the idea of IRMA, a management institute with a heart. He saw IRMA as a place that would leverage the intellectual and emotional strengths of its students and groom them into rural managers, ready to serve the nation.
For 39 years, the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) has played a pioneering role in providing quality education in rural management. In a rapidly-growing global economy, IRMA`s commitment to knowledge creation has led to it being re-invented as a knowledge institution as opposed to a mere hub for teaching, training and research.
Through its flagship program, the Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM), IRMA has not only germinated the concept of quality education in rural management and development, but actively fostered it.
The PGDRM is a course with a unique curriculum. It not only offers high quality courses through its classroom terms, but also distinct segments that focus on experiential learning through the innovative Village Fieldwork Segment (VFS) and the two internship segments (DIS and MTS). Approved by reputed accreditation bodies, the PGDRM has the distinct reputation of equipping the students with a vast array of knowledge and skills so that they can address myriad dynamic and ever-changing socio-economic challenges. This is also evident through our strong alumni base that is comprised of leaders in industry, government, education and non-profit organizations in India and abroad.
It gives me great pleasure in introducing to you the students of the batch of PGDRM 2017-19. I’m sure that you will be able to find the talent you’re looking for from this diverse and vibrant batch. I can say that with conviction as I have just delivered a full credit course to this batch and found them to be very high caliber. I am confident that they will play an important role in the growth story of your esteemed organisation.
Prof. Hitesh V. Bhatt, Director, IRMA

“You have chosen the road less travelled by, to work with those who need your services rather than opting for jobs, which would fetch you rewards, but I must warn you that you will face disillusionment and opposition at every step. I urge you to face every day with courage, patience and humility. If you persevere, you will make a difference to the rural masses and it is this difference upon which the future of our nation rests,” said Dr. Kurien to one of the graduating batches at IRMA.
Let us take you through the journey of IRMA regarding who we are, how we started, and where we are headed. “You cannot raise princes in a pigsty” was the retort from Dr. Kurien when questioned how people trained in the world class infrastructure of IRMA could possibly work in villages. This vision gave shape to the sprawling 60 acres campus on which IRMA stands today. The lush green campus of IRMA is situated at Anand - alongside the founding institutions NDDB and GCMMF. The towering Chimes, the grey walls, the winding paths and the green lawns bespeak the legend and his mastery. Every part of the campus has an enduring legacy behind it and plays a vital role in shaping the Odyssey of future rural managers.

ABOUT IRMAAnd thus, the wheels of white revolution were set rolling, at the then sleepy town of Anand. It also gave birth to the Cooperative structure, which forms the bedrock of many development initiatives in India. When Dr. Kurien was looking for managers to realize his vision of Operation Flood, he found that the educational scenario at that time did not cater to this specific need. Having already set up more than 30 institutions including AMUL, NDDB and GCMMF, he devoted his institution-building skills to developing an institute that would train managers who, apart from possessing required managerial skills, would have an additional advantage in terms of a grasp of the dynamics of rural India. Thus, IRMA was set up in 1979 with a mandate to professionalise management of rural producers’ organisations and to create a body of knowledge in the concerned field.
The institute was established with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Government of India, the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation, the National Dairy Development Board and the Government of Gujarat. The founding mandate was to provide management education, training, research and consultancy support to co-operatives and other organisations working for rural development in India. The core of IRMA’s operating philosophy has been to build and sustain a partnership between rural people and committed professional managers, as is reflected in its mission statement “to promote sustainable, ecologically-friendly and equitable socio-economic development of rural people through professional management.”
IRMA strives to contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and social justice in India’s rural society by:
• Creating a new breed of professional rural managers with the appropriate ethos and values
• Helping rural organisations and institutions in professionalising their management
• Empowering rural people through self-sustaining processes
• Building new rural management knowledge and theories through action-oriented and problem-solving research and consultancy
• Influencing public policies.
For more than three decades IRMA has been committed to excellence in scholarship, research and training. A variety of rural organisations - cooperatives/producers’ organisations, Non-Government and Government Development Organisations, social enterprises and others\engaging with the rural for enhancing its prosperity have approached IRMA for problem solving techniques and consultation. The graduates of IRMA have gone on to become thought leaders in the fields of public management, cooperatives, development, politics and more. In today’s world, when the opportunities in rural areas are brimming at its peak, IRMA’s graduates have left no stone unturned in successfully establishing the rural linkages for organizations from different sectors, given their expertise in the area. This has in turn strengthened IRMA’s position as the pioneering institute of rural management in the country and a reputed institution of knowledge throughout the world.

Post-Graduate Programme in Rural Management (PRM): The flagship course of IRMA is a rigorous two-year programme which prepares students for undertaking challenging managerial responsibilities in organizations. It is recognized as the equivalent of a Master’s degree by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). On successful completion of the same, the students are awarded with the Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM).
Since its inception, IRMA has been working closely with the industry to integrate their emerging needs into the PRM programme structure. By design, the PGDRM curriculum includes practical exposure to rural realities through fieldwork and organizational internships apart from classroom-based learning. This unique opportunity for experiential learning is at the core of IRMA’s mission of building and sustaining partnerships between rural communities and committed professional managers.
Fellow Programme in Rural Management (FPRM): Fully committed to its aim of being the torch-bearing institute of rural management,
IRMA launched the FPRM in 2001 to cater to the country’s need for academicians trained in research, who can enhance knowledge and impart skills in institutions and organizations serving the rural sector. It is a doctoral-level programme that prepares students for academic, research, and consulting careers in rural management.
Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural): The new Programme is a 15 month full-time residential programme leading to Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural), PGDMX(R). This programme is recognized as equivalent to an Executive MBA programme and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
A product of one of the most inspiring social movements of independent India’s history– the Operation Flood – IRMA is fully committed to its role of being a knowledge-institution. The vast annals of the Ravi J Matthai Library house not just archives of the flagship programme, but an entire gamut of educational, research, and consultancy activities that IRMA undertakes including:

Management Development Programmes (MDPs): These programmes offer specialized management training in finance, marketing, operations, computer applications and human resource management with development perspectives to several rural development professionals. They have come to represent IRMA’s industry interface and are hugely reputed among practitioners of rural management, benefitting executives and managers alike.
Publications: IRMA has a publication programme managed by the Committee on Research
Publications and Seminars (CORPAS) which facilitates consultancy and research by IRMA’s faculty and works for dissemination of the Institute’s research work by organizing seminars as well as bringing out a variety of publications such as working papers, research papers, cases in rural management, monographs etc.
Thursday Afternoon Seminar Series (TASS): The seminar series of IRMA provides a forum for exchange of ideas to the faculty, visiting fellows and students. Usually held every Thursday, the seminars conducted under TASS
form a major component of IRMA’s strategy for information dissemination.
Centres of Excellence: Having secured a grant from the Union Budget of 2012 through the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), IRMA has set up five Centres of Excellence in Research. The Centres aim to create an enabling climate for knowledge enhancement in tandem with the endowment units at IRMA namely RBI Endowment Unit, NABARD Chair Unit, Dr. Verghese Kurien Centre of Excellence.

THE IRMA WAYThe 23-month long PRM programme is divided into five classroom terms and three internship segments. The courses in each of these five terms are carefully structured in order to give a wholesome view of the entire discipline and are judiciously placed to enable the students to apply the same during their internships. In order to achieve this perfect learning mix, IRMA, through its illustrious faculty, follows a distinct pedagogy with regard to each course that includes case analysis, simulations, experiential exercise, project presentations, writing papers and guest lectures apart from extensive use of audio-visual aids during regular classes.
Projects and Presentations
These form an integral part of the stimulating curriculum at IRMA, giving students the opportunity to showcase their knowledge, creativity and dynamism. Working in different groups with their peers from diverse academic backgrounds widens the knowledge base of each student and brings variety to their unique learning experience, besides honing their leadership and man-management skills. Innovative projects such as writing policy briefs, creating business plans for cooperatives, creating marketing plans for specific products, book reviews etc. are vital components of the curriculum of some courses and encourage the students to develop ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking while gaining a wider perspective.
Simulation / Experiential Exercises and Audio-Visual AidsThe aforementioned components help students gain a better insight into various management concepts and development constructs. The Ravi J. Matthai library is a storehouse of some of the best films and documentaries on management and development, which are often shown during classroom sessions to illustrate concepts. Fresh graduates are inducted into the PRM programme through the famed in-house management simulation game called ‘Naranpur Express’ which simulates rural economy and emphasizes the need for asset management and financial
prudence. It is an award-winning game, having been recognized as one of the best management games by the All India Management Association (AIMA) and IRMA faculty members have been repeatedly invited by other top management schools in the country to conduct this game. Simulation games are also employed in courses to demonstrate practical situations and the strategies required to be used in them.
Case AnalysisDrawing upon their vast experience in research and consultancy, IRMA faculty members prepare and publish case studies in the field of rural management and other functional areas of management. These case studies, along with those drawn from other leading national and international B-schools, are used for bringing in contextual analyses and insights into issues being discussed in the classes by simulating a business environment in the classroom.
Experiential LearningThe most striking feature of the PRM course at IRMA is the emphasis placed on experiential learning. IRMA believes this to be an integral part in shaping the students’ outlook. Therefore, as a part of the curriculum, students spend almost a third of their time outside of campus learning and applying what they have learnt. A student graduating with a PRM diploma would have lived and worked with the rural sector for about six months, thus, becoming a valuable asset to any organisation wanting to cater to the needs of rural development.Promoting equity and ensuring equal opportunities for the marginalized is implicit in the ambit of rural management. This can only be achieved if the same principles are respected at home. Here in IRMA, both genders are treated on par. The girls face the same challenges as their male counterparts while on their fieldwork in the hinterlands. The tenacity of assignments remains the same and neither of the genders is discriminated against in the context of opportunities.

PRM CURRICULUM
The one-of-a-kind IRMA curriculum combines classroom terms and field internships in a way that a student, following this two-year sojourn, emerges a rural manager armed with both the knowledge and experience to undertake managerial responsibilities in an organization. These classroom terms and internships are structured to lead students through three distinct stages that include: A Basic Understanding, The Management Development Perspective, Reflection and Application while on their way to becoming rural managers.
Phase 1: A Basic UnderstandingWithin the first week of the First Term students are sent to stay in different villages of Gujarat as part of the Induction Segment. The stay exposes students to ground realities and helps them gain a practical perspective before heading back to classrooms. The academic endeavours begin with the first classroom term comprising fundamental courses in the fields of Management such as Organizational Behaviour, Economics, Finance, Rural Society, and Research.
Village Fieldwork Segment (VFS) The Village Fieldwork Segment (VFS) is a mandatory and evaluated term lasting seven weeks during which the students are expected to stay in designated villages selected through the support of NGOs that IRMA partners with. It
exposes students to the realities of rural life, the diverse problems faced by rural professionals, and the ways in which experienced rural managers cope with such problems. Over the years, VFS has been singled out by all the students as their most memorable experience at IRMA. The VFS consists of three distinct components: Exploratory Study of Village (ESV), Theme Paper/FPCR, and Rural Action Component (RAC).
ESV helps students develop a complete socio-economic understanding of the village. This complements the research concerning a theme that is typically a problem or opportunity prevalent in the villages. This research is conducted under the guidance of a faculty member. The RAC component, prescribed by the host organization, enables students to get hands-on experience of working in villages.
This year, the students of PRM 38 travelled to some of the most remote areas of our country such as Attappadi (Kerala), Dungarpur (Rajasthan), Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh), Kheda (Gujarat) to name a few. The students submitted comprehensive reports detailing their findings to the faculty and their reports were added to the Ravi J Matthai Library.
Phase 2: The Development-Management Perspective
Second and Third termsBuilding on the experiences of VFS, the second and third classroom terms place emphasis on gaining wider knowledge and applying it to managerial and organizational scenarios. The knowledge courses during these terms include: Macro Economic Perspectives, Understanding Organizations, Production and Operations Management. Implementation-oriented courses from all functional areas of management including Operations Management, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, and Marketing Management provide students with skills allowing them to evolve from observers to analyzers. Students are also introduced to three unique courses-‘Collective Action and Co-operation’, ‘Natural Resource and Sustainibility’,
18 Institute of Rural Management Anand
and ‘Gender and Development’. These courses teach students about tools and techniques for inducing collective action, ways in which natural resources can be most effectively utilized, and the importance of gender equality and equity.
Development Internship Segment (DIS) The two terms are capped off with the seven-week DIS, which marks the beginning of the second year of the PRM curriculum. This is designed to provide students with exposure to development interventions under the guidance of host organizations and the IRMA faculty. This segment is conceptualized on a partnership basis, which means that the host organization also benefits by giving students tasks that test the applicability of key management concepts and techniques that students learn in classroom sessions. Upholding the tradition of IRMA the DIS for PRM 38 was diverse and rich in terms of categories of organizations, geographical locations, project profiles, and sectors. IRMA received internship offers from 122 organizations for DIS. The students submitted detailed reports of their projects to both organizations and the faculty.
Phase 3: Reflection And Application
Fourth and Fifth termsThe fourth and fifth terms are the final classroom terms in IRMA’s academic calendar and the focus is on building specializations. This allows students to reflect on their learning from previous terms and build higher order management skills. This is manifested through courses like Strategic Management, Project Management, and Managing Collectives. During these terms, students are given the freedom to judiciously choose electives from two sets of courses – Rural
Development Management and Rural Enterprise Management.
While the former aims at providing in-depth understanding of various paradigms of development processes such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Monitoring and Evaluation, ICT for Development, Public Policy Analysis, and Microfinance the latter tries to build a critical perspective on business domains such as Agribusiness, Quality Management, Supply Chain Management, Social Marketing,
19PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2017-19
Brand Management, and Strategic Sourcing Management.
An illustrious example of IRMA’s unique pedagogy is the Sales and Distribution Management course, which is conducted by industry professionals led by GCMMF (AMUL) and bolstered by professionals from Pidilite, Colgate Palmolive, Big Basket, and Adani Wilmar to name a few. This is probably the only course in a top business school of the country that is fully conducted by practitioners in the field.
Management Traineeship Segment (MTS) The fourth and the fifth classroom terms are separated by the eight- week long Management Traineeship Segment (MTS). This is designed to expose students to the roles that a professional manager is expected to play. The segment is conceptualized on a partnership basis in a way that the host organizations benefit by gaining faculty-supervised professional managerial support while IRMA gets to build on its extensive knowledge base. The projects under this segment involve a diagnostic study of select aspects of managerial functions such as accounting and costing, finance, procurement, marketing,
human resources etc. or a feasibility study, cost-benefit analysis alongside impact assessment and evaluation of various developmental/market interventions.
A total of 404 internship offers were made for the batch of 172 students of PRM-38 by 110 organizations that participated in the MTS process. Offers were in diverse domains like agribusiness, rural marketing, CSR, and development among others.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Interested organizations forward their Job Announcement Form (JAF) to the Institute latest by
January 10, 2019
Pre-Placement Talks (PPTs): Pre-Placement Talk provides both the recruiting organisation and the students with an opportunity to interact with each other and clarify mutual expectations. We would appreciate if the organisation can send its representative(s) who can interact with the students.
December 15, 2018 to January 26, 2019
Intimation of the Interview Dates to Organisations:January 25, 2019
Placement Week:February 04-09, 2019 (as per thematic grouping)
IRMA’s placement process is unlike that of the other institutes in that there is no concept of Day 0 or 1. We welcome all our participating firms having interest in our students and rather group the placement activity into thematic groupings to help both the prospective employer and the employees in choosing the partner of their choice. Thus, for example, all firms interested in agribusiness or finance are grouped similarly and all those in the development sector are grouped together. This helps in students not getting lost during the placement process besides making peer comparisons within a sector much easier for all in terms of offer conditions being given within a sector.
Job Offer, Acceptance & Joining:It is required that an organization complete the entire selection process within the day allotted to it during the placement week.
Subsequently, final offer/appointment letter may be issued by the organizations to the concerned students within a months’ time via post or email.
Students are free to join your organization by Second week of May 2019.
We hope that this brief voyage through our beautiful campus has helped you understand IRMA and its unique disposition. Over the years, IRMA has carved a niche in management education and has created the new discipline of rural management itself. The alumni of the Institute have become thought leaders and change agents in their chosen spheres, which has led to IRMA’s recognition on the international platform as an institute par excellence.
As the current batch of PRM 38 stands on the cusp of entering their managerial careers, we cordially invite all organisations looking for young, bright and committed managerial talent to take part in our campus placement process.
The unique design of the curriculum at IRMA has made the students ready to undertake challenging responsibilities in various domains of management and we are confident that you will find candidates meeting your requirements in practically every field of interest to your organisation. We look forward to a mutually beneficial and long-lasting relationship with your esteemed organization. IRMA beckons you to engage.
