Pritchard Community Water System News

• There are plans to build a proper shed over the reservoir instruments to protect them from the weather.• There are also plans for pumphouse building maintenance, including miscellaneous internal upgrades. We will continue to repair leaks on

failing services in Pritchard.

LED lighting was installed in the pumphouse, which will reduce power consumption and

save money on light bulbs and maintenance.

Sediment was cleaned out of the wet well in 2014, which helps enhance pump life and improve water quality.

A new building-floor drain pit was dug, and insulation and backfill were added around the

building to help prevent freezing in the winter.

kitchen• Wash only full loads in the dishwasher. an efficient dishwasher usually uses less water than washing dishes by hand.• Install a low-flow faucet aerator, which can cut water use in half.Water saved: 1 to 2 gallons per minute.•When buying a new dishwasher, consider purchasing a water-saving model. (new models use up to 25 per cent less water than older ones.)Water saved: 3 gallons per load.

aroUnD the hoUse•Wash only full loads in the clothes washer. Washing small loads uses over twice as much water per pound of laundry.•When buying a new clothes washer, consider purchasing a water-saving model.Water saved: up to 40 gallons per load.•Insulate hot water pipes where possible to avoid long delays (and wasted water) while waiting for the water to "run hot."

Some tips and tricks for effective lawn wateringMost lawns are

overwatered and receive far more water than they require for a healthy appearance. The key to successful lawn watering is to apply the water infrequently, yet thoroughly. This creates a deep, well-rooted lawn that efficiently uses water stored in the soil. To know when to water the lawn, simply observe the grass. at the first sign of wilting and discoloration, apply a maximum of 1 inch of water to the lawn. use a rain gauge to monitor watering.

avoid watering during the middle of the day when evaporation rates are highest and the water you use will do the least good. Early morning or evening watering will minimize evaporation and help newly seeded areas through the day’s heat.

keep in minD• Established, healthy lawns can

survive several weeks of dormancy during summer with little or no water.

• Watering early in the morning puts less strain on public water supplies because the peak load is normally during the evening.

• Excess water can keep the soil

too moist, which damages roots and can increase the risk of diseases.

• To promote deep rooting and lawns that tolerate dry conditions leave the grass long. mow grass no shorter than two inches.

• Don’t mow during the heat of day, especially when conditions are hot and dry; newly cut grass blades lose water quickly.

sprinklersThere are many sprinkler types to

help deal with irregular shaped lawns and off angles. other tips include:

• consider a timed sprinkler, which automatically shuts off after a desired rate of application.

• use drip irrigation or weeping hoses whenever practical; less water is lost to evaporation.

• aerate your lawn to improve water penetration and reduce runoff.
