Ecological Succession• Succession – gradual development of a community over time.• Huge areas of Yellowstone National Park were burned in 1988

• Development of a community where no other organisms had previously lived.– No soil– Bare rock– Slow transformation– Ex: Volcanic islands, retreating glaciers

• Pioneer species – the first organisms to live in an area.– Ex: lichen, mosses

• Usually shorter than primary succession– Soil is present for plants to develop
