Learning Objective

To write equations in standard form

To graph piecewise functions

Write an equation in standard form

1. y-intercept: 3 and x-intercept: –3

(0, 3) & (–3, 0)

y – 0 = 1(x – (–3))

y = x + 3

x – y = –3

Or you already know the slope and y-intercept

y= mx + b

y = 1x + 3

x – y = –3 23

Parallel & Perpendicular Lines

Parallel Lines have the SAME slope

Perpendicular Lines have OPPOSITE RECIPROCAL slopes (flip fraction & change sign)

Write a Linear Equation

2. Write an equation in Point-Slope Form of the line through (–7, 2) and perpendicular to –2x + 3y = 7Find slope of –2x + 3y = 7 Perpendicular slope = 23

Or get into slope-intercept form

–2x + 3y = 7

3y = 2x + 7

y =

Write a Linear Equation

3. Write an equation in Slope-Intercept Form of the line with y-intercept of 5 and parallel to 9x – 7 = 3y

Parallel slope = 3

y–intercept = 5

y = 3x + 523

Get into slope-intercept form

9x – 7 = 3y

y = 3x –
