Goal! • SWBAT evaluate the ancient Chinese

China!

Think back… • What made ancient civilizations like Egypt, and

Mesopotamia successful…???

Geography!! China is surrounded by the Himalaya Mountains = Protection!

They also have fertile land because they are near the Huang He River OR Yellow River

How did they organize their country?

• They had a dynasty! • (hint: If my mom is a teacher then....)

Shang Dynasty Shang Dynasty- the FIRST dynasty

-started in 1776 BC to ~ 1100 BC They are famous for: 1.Using picture symbols as

their written language 2.Working with Bronze 3.Creating a LUNAR

calendar (Lunar= based off moon)

Zhou Dynasty • Took over after Shang Dynasty (1100-221 BC)• What did they do?

They began using Mandate of Heaven

Used Iron instead of bronze, which was cheaper and harder

Mandate of Heaven • The belief that their ruler’s power came from the

gods. • They had divine right to rule.

Shang → Zhou Dynasty

-rulers needed to govern wisely if there was to be peace

• Just and peaceful society.

• Society worked well when all people acted properly based upon their roles in relationships

Philosophies Founder of Philosophy

Teachings Influences

   Daoism

Lao-tzu • Nature is full of opposites (ex. like life and death or light and darkness)

• True harmony comes from balancing the opposite forces of nature, called yin and yang.

Daoism encouraged rulers to rule less harshly

Daoism

Legalism Philosophies Founder of

Philosophy Teachings Influences

   Legalism

Han-fei-tzu •  Based on the idea that people always pursue their own self-interest

• Strict laws and enforce rewards for good behavior and harsh punishments for bad behavior

• Rulers must have absolute power backed up by military

•  Used heavily in the Qin Dynasty of China

• Gave Qin justification to kill people who opposed the government

Now… What would these philosophies look like in the

US!? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeYDhMmVLXI

• How would each theorist think about this issue? What would they advise President Obama?

Advise the President! • Write a letter to the President advising him to adopt

one of the ancient philosophies. Include:

A description of the philosophy. At least 2 reasons why he should use it.
