Research Question
To analyse the diachronic development of Spatial Morphologies
and Social Rules implicit in (Yoruba) Domestic Space Use
Why?
To contribute to the understanding of internal spatialorganization of Yoruba domestic spaces and of space use
patterns.
To conduct a comparative analysis of traditional andcontemporary Yoruba housing; an process that will ultimatelyaid the design of mass housing.

Data Focus: -
Households (4 areas, 40 households each)
Activities and Objects (20 activities and 38 object categories).
Results Focus: - Physical Space: - Geometric Typing
Social Space: - 1) Degree ofExtensibility
Spatial boundaries (of Activities & Objects in thedomestic space)
2) Degree ofSpecialization of Space
The impact of activities and objects Spill on the
specialization of space

Social Space
Boundary Extent
(Activities & Objects).
Degree of Extensibility: -
1) Slightly less extensibility (activities)
in newer geometric types.
2) Wide extensibility for family living,
general storing, eating, and
reading/study.
3) Cooking and food preparation have
more restricted extensibility in
newer geometries.
4) More differences in extensibility of
objects. Some object categories
were less extensible in the newer
geometries, and others where
more extensible in newer types.

Social Space Analysis
Space Specialization
(Use and Content graph).
Degree of Specialization: -
1. Low specialization of the
orowa, living room, bedroom
and corridor in all geometries.
2. High specialization of the
Garage, study and toilet.
3. The veranda, store and
Kitchen are more specializedin newer geometric types.
