Studied law on the ContinentAt age 37 appointedChancellor by King Henry II whomhe knew since childhood.

Thomas and Henry did everythingtogether, they went hunting riding and feasting.

In 1161 the Archbishop of Canterbury died.King Henry decided to appoint Thomas asthe new archbishop

Thomas wasn’t sure about the motives of this appointment.“I know your plans for the Church, and that you will put forth claims which I, as Archbishop, must necessarily oppose.”

Thomas’ life soon changed.Sought God’s guidance throughprayer, vigils, fasting.Resigned as Chancellor.

Refused law changesespecially ‘Constitutions of Clarendon’ whichaimed at making Churchlaw subject to king’sdecision. King Henrystarted imposing taxes and fines on the Church.

Due to this untenable situation Thomasleft England.

Welcomed in Franceby King Louis VII.

Thought about reconciling andgoing back to England.

In 1170 Thomasreturned to Canterbury.

Within less than amonth was attackedand martyred.

In his rage and angerKing Henry was heardsaying ‘Who will ridme of this priest?’

On 29th December1170 he was attackedby the king’s knightsin his Cathedral.

Such cruel murder led toThomas being veneratedas a martyr.

Henry was very sad whenhe heard what hadhappened. He walkedbarefoot through Canterburywhile being whipped.

place of pilgrimage.

Enacts a new law –making him head of the

Church of England.

Imprisoned in 1534.

“What a blessed thing it was to suffer loss of goods or imprisonment for the love of God!”

Put to trial. 15 months of imprisonment

with visible physical effects. Jury gives

verdict of death.
