8FOOTBALL TEAM SERVES “SOUPER” BOWL LUNCH
Immokalee - For the fourth year in a row, the players and coaches of the Ave Maria University football team treated clients of the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen at Guadalupe Social Services of Catholic Charities to a “Souper” Bowl tailgate party. Instead of the typical meal of soup, residents were served an all-American menu of chili dogs, baked beans, chips,
cupcake, bread and juice.
The coaches prepared the meal and the players served a total of 120 clients. Christopher Ice, President of Ave Maria University, also lent a helping hand. The soup kitchen was adorned with festive Super Bowl themed decorations.

“We wanted to give our clients a fun day with some excitement,” said Guadalupe Social Services Program Coordinator Peggy Rodriguez. “We are grateful to the Ave Maria University Football Team for continuing to come out and do this every year. The interaction between the team and our clients is so special.” Three raffle prizes were awarded during the meal as well.
“The players and coaches get a lot more out of it than they give and have the privilege to
experience joy, love and gratitude,” said Ave Maria University Football Team Head Coach Joe Patterson. “Sports is about pursuing excellence and virtue, and you want to be as close to virtue as you can. To engage on a human to human level is integral to the development of the players as men.”
Thank you to the Ave Maria Football Team for their service!

DID YOU KNOW?• Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act.• Florida is the #3 state for Human Trafficking reports to the National Hotline.• Human trafficking is the second-largest criminal industry after Drug Trafficking and a 150-billion-dollar industry.• The FBI estimates that 70% of identified minor victims of trafficking have been through the child welfare system, especially foster care.Human trafficking is a serious issue in our communities in Southwest Florida. The Catholic Charities Anti-Human Trafficking Assistance Program serves victims of the various forms of trafficking. Survivors have enormous needs including food, clothing, housing and referrals to medical, legal and mental health providers. Rehabilitation for individuals will also require empowering life and job skills training. The program offers a victim-centered approach of delivering aid to clients while maintaining a mission of compassion, integrity, and empathy. Your generosity will give a victim a chance at finding a new and better life. Be the one to help!
Anti-Human Traf f icking Assistance Program
Fort Myers - Catholic Charities caseworkers strive to help clients by offering as many resources as possible. Often
clients have more than just one issue that is keeping them from becoming self-sufficient. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of Catholic Charities encounters people with limited resources daily. The program annually receives funding from the Walmart Foundation through Catholic Charities USA for outreach. SNAP provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of needy individuals so they can purchase
healthy food. Catholic Charities caseworkers conduct outreach in Lee, Hendry and Glades counties by distributing SNAP brochures and helping individuals to complete and submit applications to receive the assistance. But often the aid goes beyond the SNAP benefits.
“Our job is more than just filling out an application,” said Karla Hidalgo, SNAP case worker for Catholic Charities. “We also connect them with resources to assist their situations and alleviate their financial burdens.”
Such was the case with Florentino Arencibia, a Cuban immigrant who had to move out of his apartment with his companion dogs. Florentino came to Catholic Charities to get assistance
for SNAP benefits and it was then he told Karla about his financial troubles. He said he was removed from his apartment and moved in with a friend to occupy a one-room living space. Along with providing SNAP application assistance, Karla reached out to the Salvation Army for additional resources.
“We were happy to help Florentino get situated into his new place,” said Karla. “We routinely go above and beyond for our clients. It is important to have compassion and empathy for those who are vulnerable in our communities,” she said.
