Project Overview•Boiling Springs Lake – Lassen

Volcanic National Park, CA

•Ideal conditions for

thermophile virus

•ROV(Remotely Operated

Vehicle) maps the depth and

measures surface temperature

•No Sampler System yet

Samples

Data

Boiling Spring Lake 120 deg. Celsius , pH: 2

Requirements• Collects water samples of at

least 0.5 L • 120 deg. Celsius, sulfurous and

sulfuric acids, pH: 2• 500 m distance real-time data

transmit

Water Sampler DesignConcept selection

• 128 oz. force-stroke Linear Solenoid Actuator for opening and closing water inlet

• T6061 Aluminum body and threaded rod support structure

• Chrome Faucet

Water Sampler Design

Analysis and ManufacturingAnalysis• Stress Analysis for the

Wall Thickness, Buoyancy Analysis, CFD analysis for water flow

• Material testing under acidic environment

Manufacturing• Entirely manufactured at

PSU Machine Shop, including CNC machining

Final Water Sampler

Wireless Data Transmission

Wireless Data TransmissionDevice• Arduino Uno R3• XBee Pro 60mW Chip

Antenna - Series 1 • Thermocouple

Amplifier MAX6675

Programming• Real-time data display• Data Logging

Testing

Testing Results• Takes up to 1.2 L at 1.5 m depth in 1.5

minutes• Structure compatible with existing docking

mechanism• Structure tolerates pressure at 1.5 m

depth with good seal• Transmits depth and temperature

measurements in real-time from a distance up to 100 m

• Simple GUI with LABVIEW© interface work well

Conclusion• The water sampler and the data transmission

systems satisfy all the requirements at the fundamental level

• Improvements could be made are: 1. Finding a better cable for the winch, 2. More convenient connection of the device to the

winch system, 3. More robust housing for the solenoid actuator4. Optimized dock for easier exit and entrance5. More advanced tool for data transmission to fully

operate ROV from computer from the shore
