1 Edit the RBSU (ROM Based Setup Utility).

Boot the system and press the F9 key when prompted.

2 Choose “Advanced Options”

3 Choose “Processor Options”

4 Make sure the “Virtualization” feature is enabled

5 Copy “hpvm-recovery” to local disk. And mount it into virtual media.

Install over network using iLO’s Virtual Media.

Boot or reboot your server to the virtual media.

6 The media is bootable and will kick off an easy self-guided application.

Press Enter to continue, and press Enter again to confirm install fro m recovery CD

7 Un-mount the virtual media and reboot server when the installation completed.

Click “Disconnect” on the Virtual Media page, and press Enter to reboot.

8 Server will boot into ESX 3i system.

Press ‘F2’ to enter customize system console.

9 Choose ‘Configure Root Password’ to set the password.

10 Enter the password twice to set it for root user then press Enter.

11 Enter ‘Configure Management Network’ to configure the network parameters.

This is the service console network connection which use for remote network management of the ESXi server.

12 Enter “Network Adapters”

13 Choose 2 network adapters for redundancy.

By default the first nic is selected.(vmnic0).

14 Enter ‘IP Configuration’ to configure IP

15 Configure static IP address, subnet, gateway

18 Enter ‘custom dns suffixes’

19 Set DNS suffixes parameter

20 After setup completed, press ESC to exit ‘Configure Management Network’ and restart management service.

How to configure Time configuration and scratch configure for ESX host

Note: The Scratch configuration is only request by ESXi Cluster setupStep

1 Click one host and choose time configuration in the configuration tab

2 Click option

3 Choose NTP settings and click add to add the ntp servers, generally they are DC servers.

4 Click start to start the NTP agents.

5 Choose advanced setting

6 Click ScratchConfig and configure the value to direct a storage folder path.

How to install patches on ESX host with update manager

Note: The patch will be centrally approved from top node.

1 Make sure ESX update manager has been installed , click ‘manage plugins.’ in the menu

2 Check if VMware update manager client 1.0u4 has been installed and enabled

3 Right click the host, click ‘scan for updates’

4 It will display the updates which missed on this host.

5 Right click the host and click ‘Remediate’ to apply the updates.

Make sure all virtual machines on this host have been migrated before this action.

6 Click ‘next’ to apply the update baseline.

7 Choose the update which need be applied and click ‘next’ to proceed.

8 Choose the option to apply patches immediately or schedule a time and click ‘next’.

9 Click ‘Finish’ to submit the updates.

10 A progress bar will appear in below panel.

It will take the host into maintenance mode and install the patches automatically.

How to scan storage adapter to add a new LUNStep Action/

OutcomeReference

1 Note: SAN Identifier name should be informed to storage team for LUN assignment.

Storage team will then assign the new LUN to the relevant fiber channel card.

Click the ESX host, in the right panel, choose configuration tab and click ‘storage adapter’

2 Click the fiber channel adapter and click ‘rescan’ to scan assigned LUN.

3 Click ‘OK’ to confirm rescan storage adapter.

4 Assigned LUN will appear in the below panel if scan successfully.

How to add Datastore to an ESX server with the assigned LUNStep Action/

OutcomeReference

1 Click one host and choose ‘configuration’ tab.

Click Add storage button.

3 Choose Disk/Lun and click Next.

4 A LUN will appear in the panel if it was newly assigned , click next to add it to the VMFS storage.

How to manage VMware datacenter in virtual center Step

1 Right click the root folder and click ‘new datacenter’ to create a datacenter.

2 Datacenter name will appear in the left panel.

DataCenter Name will use Network site Code (e,g CHSGH01)

3 Right click a datacenter and choose ‘new cluster’ to create a new cluster.

4 Check ‘VMware HA’ and ‘VMware DRS’ and click next

5 Choose the default settings and click next.

6 In administration Control select “Allow VMs to be powered on even if they violate availability constraints”

7 Click ‘Finish’ to finish the new cluster wizard.

8 After a cluster was created, can import a host to it. Please refer ‘how to import ’

How to add one ESX host to the existing clusterStep

1 In VI client, right click the cluster name and click ‘Add host’

2 Input the ESX host ip and credentials

3 Click ‘Next’ to finish the wizard. ESX host will appear in the left panel.

How to manage files in the datastoreStep

Action/Outcome Reference

1 In the summary tab of the ESX host, double click a datastore name to browse it.

2 To delete files in a datastore, choose one folder and click delete icon.

Warning: This is un-recovery action please make sure it with no use before delete them.

3 To upload/download filed into datastore, browse to the datastore and click the upload/download button.

4 To rename a datastore, right click a datastore name and choose ‘rename’

How to Vmotion a Virtual machine to another esx host.Step

Reference

1 Right click one virtual machine and click ‘migrate’.

2 The migration wizard will appear, choose another host in he same cluster and click next.

3 If no resource pool, select the cluster name and click next.

4 Choose high priority and click next.

5 Click finish to complete the vmotion wizard.

6 A progress bar will appear in the below panel.

How to create/delete/go to VMware snapshotStep

1 To add a snapshot for a virtual machine, right click it, click snapshot->take snapshot

2 Input the name of the snapshot and click ok.

3 After completed, go to snapshot->snapshot manager

4 The snapshot which was taken will appear in the snapshot manager.

5 To delete or rename a snapshot, right click a virtual machine and got to snapshot->snapshot manager

6 You can go to a previous snapshot or delete it by clicking ‘Go to’ or ‘Delete’ button.

How to install and configure VCB (VMware consolidated backup)Step Action/

1 To install the vcb software, double click the installation file and click next.

2 Check to agree the agreement

3 Click install to install the software

4 Installation processes

5 Click finish to complete the installation.

6 Configure the vcb configuration file to meet the backup environment.

Browse to C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\config , edit the config.js file.

7 Configure the prescan.bat file under C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\generic

8 Configure the postscan.bat file under C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\generic

9 Pass these file’s configuration information to storage team for backup.

How to install and use VMware converter to convert a server.Step

1 To install VMware converter, double click the installation file then click next

2 Check to agree the license agreement.

3 Click next

4 Check local installation and click next

5 Click install

6 Installation will process

7 Click finish to complete the installation

8 To converter a virtual machine, run the VMware converter , choose the source type

9 Choose the machine which need be convertered, generally is the machine which be installed with converter.

10 Type the esx host name and account which will host the virtual machine.

11 Type the virtual machine name and select the datastore.

12 Click next

Click finish to complete the wizard, the converter will process.

How to import/remove/delete a virtual machineStep

Action/Outcome

Reference

1 To Remove a virtual machine from the inventory, power off and right click it and choose ‘remove from inventory’

2 Click yes, it will remove the virtual machine from inventory.

Virtual machine files will not be deleted from datastore.

3 To add a virtual machine in to inventory, browse to the virtual machine folder in datastore, right click the .vmx file and choose ‘add to inventory’

4 The Add to inventory wizard will appear, choose the data center and click next.

5 Choose the cluster and click next.

6 Choose the resource pool, if no resource pool, click next.

7 Click finish to finish the wizard.

8 To Delete a virtual machine from the storage, power off it and click ‘delete from disk’

Warning: this will delete the virtual machine thoroughly. Make sure it is with no use before deleting.

9 Click yes to confirm delete.

How to restore a virtual machine from a VCB backup file Step

1 Request Storage Team to restore the virtual machine backup file to the local disk(for example: vcb server’s MNT folder)

2 Open VMware converter click ‘convert machine’ button.

3 Choose the source type as ‘backup image or third-party virtual machine’.

4 Browse to the folder which store the restored virtual machine and select the .vmx file.

5 Type the esx host ip address and user account.

Click next.

6 Select the storage to store the virtual machine and click next.

Make sure there is enough space on the storage to store it.

7 Click finish to proceed the import.

How to backup and restore a ESXi configuration Step

1 Run the VMware vi remote cli program.

2 In the cmd prompt window, type the command as this format to backup a esx3i server‘s backup to a file: vicfg-cfgbackup.pl –server <ip address> <file path>

3 It will prompt for the ESXi server’s user name and password, enter the password, it will generate a file to the input path.

4 To restore a configuration backup file to a ESXi server, type the follow command in the command window:Vicfg-cfgbackup.pl –server <ipaddress> -l <backup file path>.

Make sure the backup file is corresponding to the right server.

After restore completed, it will prompt to restart the server. Type ‘yes’ to confirm.

How to import a vm template into virtual center.Step

1 Browse to the storage folder which stores the vm template file.

Right click the vmtx file and choose ‘add to inventory’

2 Set the template name and choose the location to store the template.

Click ‘next’

3 Select the cluster name and click ‘next’.

4 Select the host which hosts the vm template and click next.

5 Click ‘Finish’ to finish the wizard.

6 The template will appear in the inventory’s Virtual Machines and template view.

How to deploy a virtual machine with the templateStep

1 Right click the template name and choose ‘deploy virtual machine from this template’

2 Choose the cluster which store the virtual machine.

Note: template should be within the cluster’s LAN.

3 Choose the datastore to store the virtual machine.

4 Click next

5 Click Finish

6 The deploy progress bar will appear in the panel below.

How to power on/power off/restart a virtual machineStep Action/Outcome Reference

To power on/power off a virtual machine ,Right click it and choose power on or power off.

Choose suspend /reset to suspend or reset a virtual machine.

Shut Down Guest option will shut down the OS. It will not be available without the VMtools installed.

How to install VMware tools on the virtual machineStep

1 Right click a virtual machine and click ‘Install/Update VMware Tools’

2 A prompt window will appear in the virtual machine’s console.

Check ‘Interactive Tools Upgrade ’

3 A VMware Tools installation wizard window will appear.

If it doesn’t appear, go to ‘My computer’ and double click the cd-rom icon.

Click next to proceed.

Check ‘Typical’ and click next.

Click install.

It will prompt to set the hardware acceleration level, click yes.

Click Advanced.

Click the troubleshoot tab and drag the hardware acceleration bar to Full.

Click OK

Click finish to complete the VMware tools installation wizard.

Click yes to restart the virtual machine or click no to schedule another time to restart it.

How to create a virtual machine without the templateStep

1 Right click a host and choose ‘new virtual machine’

2 In the wizard, choose typical and click next

3 Input the virtual machine name and click next

4 Choose a datastore to store the virtual macine

5 Select a OS version

6 Configure the processor number

7 Configure the memory size

8 Configure the network nic number.

9 Configure the OS disk size

10 Click Finish to complete the wizard.

How to manage folders in virtual center Step

1 Use ‘Virtual machines and templates’ view.

2 Right click cluster name and choose ‘new folder’.

3 Enter folder name.

4 To remove a folder, right click a folder name and choose remove.

How to attach CD medial or floppy media to virtual machine Step

1 Right click the virtual machine and click ‘edit settings’.

2 Choose the CD/DVD Drive and click Datastore ISO file

3 Browse the datastore and choose the existing iso file and click ok.

4 Click ok to complete attach the media file.

5 To attach a floppy media, right click the virtual machine and click ‘edit settings’, choose Floppy disk and check ‘Datastore ISO file’, browse to the floppy img file and click ok

6 Click ok to complete the media attachment.

How to add a disk to a virtual machine Step

Reference

1 Right click a virtual machine a click ‘Edit Settings’, click ‘Add..’ button.

2 Choose ‘Hard Disk’ and click ‘next’.

3 Check create a new virtual disk and click next.

4 Set the disk size and check ‘store with the virtual machine’ or choose another datastore location.

5 Choose the default option and click next.

6 Click finish to complete the wizard.

7 Enter OS, go to computer management, right click disk management and choose rescan disks.

8 A new disk will appear, right click it and choose initialize disk, it will appear as the unallocated disk.

9 Right click it and choose ‘new partition’ to create a new partition

10 The new partition wizard will appear , click next.

11 Choose default setting, click next

12 Set the size of the partition.

13 Set the drive letter.

14 Set other options.

15 Click finish to complete the wizard.
