20
vSphere vCenter Server 5.1 What's New
vCenter Server is evolving into a virtualization platform providing the necessary management framework to deliver the needs of todays virtualization administrators. With vCenter 5.1 vCenter Single Sign On Server Authentication services supporting multiple identity sources
Enhanced Inventory Services Inventory Object Tagging
vSphere Web Client Fully functional, cross platform vSphere client
Architectural and Database performance improvements Faster response, better optimization of data
Separation of components allow for improved performance by reducing direct communications to vCenter Server

vCenter Single Sign On
22
vCenter Server 5.1 Login Experience
No VC
required ?
Users connect to Identity Service for Cloud Infrastructure Suite, not individual vCenters.
Connect from any site Identity service instances are multi site aware.
23
The Situation Today
Directory Server (AD)
vCD
Authentication at multiple points for the same administrator
Integrates only with Active Directory
Lack of true Single Sign On Identity limited in scope No way for a solution to trust
another vCenter
Mgmt App
Mgmt App
24
Introducing vCenter Single Sign On
Provides single sign-on across management apps vCenter now authenticates with vCenter single sign-on (not AD) Establishing a notion of a solution identity
Support for multiple or non AD user repositories (eg OpenLDAP) Trust between components using token exchange as opposed to
each component creating users in VC, VCD, VSM, etc. Better Architecture A single component that offers Multifactor Authentication, multisite support,
multiple directory service types
Support an open standard: SAML 2.0 and WS-TRUST SAML 2.0 tokens can be used to authenticate user to a different trust domain
(a public cloud, say)

vCenter Single Sign On Server
Auto-discovery of vCenter 5.1 in vSphere Web Client.
One time manual registration of vCenter 5.0 needed for discovery by vSphere Web Client. https://:9443/admin-app/
User gets to see all vCenter instances for which they have permission.
Linked Mode no longer required for Unified Views of vCenters
Linked Mode is still required for: Sharing of Permissions Sharing of Roles Sharing of Licenses

Inventory Svc When to use basic vCenter Single Sign-On: If you have a single vCenter server
of any supported inventory size (up to 1,000 hosts / 10,000 VMs)
If you have multiple geographically dispersed locations each with a local vCenter servers and have no requirement for a single pane of glass view provided with vCenter Linked Mode
You are using the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA)
Most common deployment option (VMware recommended)
This is a single standalone instance of the SSO server that supports the connectivity of Active Directory, OpenLDAP, Local Operating System and SSO embedded users and groups
This typically would be local to the vCenter Server
Used by the vCenter Server Simple Install option
Preinstalled with the vCenter Server Appliance
30
vCenter Single Sign-On Configurations
Primary vCenter Single Sign-On Used for advanced configurations
vCenter SSO High Availability (SSOHA)
Local Copy at Remote Sites (Multisite) Installable version of SSO (Windows

Removes additional risk (WAN) Maintains same SSO security domain
Required for Linked Mode Individual Installer Does not provide site redundancy Manual Steps required to maintain
synchronization of SSO instances
1. Install Primary SSO in NY 2. Install IS, VC in NY 3. Install Multisite SSO in LA 4. Replicate SSO from NY to LA 5. Install IS, VC in LA 6. Replicate SSO in LA to NY 7. Repeat steps 3-6 for each site
33
Installing vCenter Single Sign On
Fresh Installation of vCenter Single Sign On Deployment Types (Basic/Primary/MultiSite Replica Node/HA Backup)
Primary should be Windows vCenter Single Sign On instance
Requires a database, supports SQL 2005/2008, Oracle 10g,11g Mixed mode authentication is required for bundled database (MS SQL Server Express).
admin@System-Domain user is created by default as vCenter SSO Administrator Installs 2 Windows services:
VMware Single Sign On Service (Tomcat service) SSPI Service
Single Sign On Server included with vCenter Server Appliance
Upgrade Installation from previous version of vSphere vSphere vCenter 4.x and higher Upgrade process will install SSO first before upgrading to vCenter 5.1 (simple install) Install SSO before upgrading any vCenter Server components (custom install)
34
Configuring vCenter Single Sign On Server
Defaults Automatically creates SSO Admin User: admin@System-Domain Password: defined during install Local/Active Directory administrators groups added to SSO super users during vCenter install Login with SSO Admin privileges to
add additional identity sources Define Polices Update STS Certificates
Register vCenter 5.0 servers https://localhost:9443/admin-app
Does not support vSphere 4.x environments Desktop VI Clients

Inventory Services
36
Enhanced Inventory Service
Inventory Service provides a query service into VPXD Used by vSphere Web Client Provides reduced load on VPXD from client requests Maintains a cache of vCenter inventory
Inventory Service installed as a separate component SSO/vCenter Server or a separate server Inventory Service included with vCenter Server Appliance Default Port used 10443, 7443 (configurable)
37
Inventory Object Tagging
Ability to create custom tags on inventory objects Associate an arbitrary set of objects of the same type using a tag Search for objects by that tag Enables the business case where customers want to create arbitrary groups of
VMS, Clusters, Datastores for ease of management Storage PBM uses tagging to make placement decisions
Inventory objects can have multiple tags associated with it Assists Folder limitations of one folder per inventory object Ability to assign permissions based on tags to come later

Allows an admin to view objects by solutions But maintain global perspectives
Allows an admin to jump to the crucial element faster via object relationships and object search With less clicks
Reduces client clutter and repetitive information by simplifying display of objects Displayed objects are all that is communicated
between server and browser Hierarchical Trees are maintained to aid in
