Vijay Kumar (roboticist)

Vijay Kumar (born April 12, 1962) is an Indianroboticist and UPS foundation professor in the Schoolof Engineering & Applied Mechanics with secondaryappointments in computer and information science andelectrical and systems engineering at the University ofPennsylvania, and will become the new Dean of PennEngineering on July 1, 2015.[1] Kumar is known for hisresearch in the control and coordination of multi-robotformations.[2][3]

2 About his research workHis fundamental contributions, which straddle both the-ory and practice, address the control and planning of mul-tiple robots cooperating to explore, map , manipulate andmove in 3-D environment. He was rst to formulateand solve the problem of cooperative mobile manipula-tion with multiple robots, simultaneously controlling thegrass motion and rolling/sliding interactions in the early90s. He was also the rst to work on the multi robot for-mation control problem leading to highly cited papers onthe subject in the late 90s. Kumar"s creative theoreti-cal, algorithmic, and experimental work on cooperatingrobots have transformed the science of robotics systemsand impacted a wide range of application in the area ofnetworked and cyber physical systems.
