WHAT IS THE FLYING CLASSROOM?
Truman (grade 3) successfully constructed a sheet-metal wing.
The Flying Classroom is a cutting-edge, global, STEM+ learning adventure.
It is a Digital Learning Tool designed to help students excel in Math, Science,
Reading, and other core subject areas aligned to academic benchmarks for
grades 3-10. The curriculum serves as an intervention and enrichment tool.
The Flying Classroom curriculum is aligned to the National Common Core
Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. The project consists
of two-month educational adventures that will take place at the start of
three consecutive school years beginning in 2014.
Powered by state-of-the-art technologies, The Flying Classroom
will utilize a Beechcraft 400XPR airplane to travel to all seven continents,
starting with Asia and Oceania in year one.
It’s as easy as ...
a business jet transformed into a virtual classroom
powered by students’ minds.
WHO WE ARE
IN 2005, 21-year-old Captain Barrington
Irving founded Experience Aviation, a
501(c)3 non-profit organization that
engages students by using aviation to
develop STEM skills. At our learning center
in Miami, Florida, students (ages 8-18)
learn to chart flights, operate advanced
flight simulators, and rivet sheet metal.
Since 2007, over 87% of Experience
Aviation students have pursued STEM
careers and programs, engaged in over
560,000 hours of academic instruction,
and have earned $1.3 million in scholar-
ships to Duke University, the U.S. Air Force
Academy, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University, and other fine schools.
“These kids are really smart,” says
Steven King, one of our instructors. “They
don’t even realize how smart they are until
they start building stuff.”
Ba’Carri Johnson is a perfect example.
She didn’t know how to use a ruler when
she joined our program. Now she is on a
full math scholarship at Duke University.
”For me, EA was a door opener,” says
Johnson. “I came to Duke as a minority
female with a dream of finding my
connection to the STEM fields and a desire
to change the world through service to
others. And it’s all thanks to EA!”
// THE IMPACT
30% of our students
had never seen the ocean until
Captain Irving flew them over
the Florida coastline.
35% are women.
57% have never been
outside of Miami.
81% are from Title 1 schools.
83% have increased their
proficiency in math and science.
95% have developed
a strong interest in pursuing
STEM careers.
If it wasn’t for Barrington, I would never have gotten
this experience of constructing a plane and popping rivets;
I would have been at the mall with my friends.”

Q How did you get into aviation?
A When I was 15, a pilot came into my
parents’ store and asked me if I ever
thought about being a pilot. I said,
“No, I don’t think I’m smart enough.”
Q How did he respond?
A He put me in the cockpit of a Boeing
777 and let me play with the buttons.
Then he paid for my first flight lesson.
Q What aircraft do you dream of flying?
A The A10 Warthog.
Q Where’s the wildest place you’ve landed?
A Shemya, Alaska. It’s an island only
1 mile long and 2 miles wide. There’s a
sign that says: “It’s not the end of the
world but you can see it from here.
Q How do you stay awake on long flights?
A I talk and sing to myself quite a bit.
Q What do you eat when you fly?
A Sunflower seeds, raisins, energy bars,
and I drink lots of water
Q What super power would you want?
A Easy. The ability to fly—and laser eyes.
Q What should people know about
The Flying Classroom?
A This isn’t just an aircraft; it’s an
exploration vehicle for learning
that will teach millions of kids in
ways they’ve never been taught
before. Our online portal will
make students a virtual part of
the expedition and research.
MEET THE CAPTAIN …
Kids want to be challenged, but today too many are bored and uninspired. I want to use aviation to excite and empower a new generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers.” —CAPTAIN BARRINGTON IRVING
