DESCRIPTION

For one hundred years (1840 - 1940) the freak show was one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Today shows like these would be considered unacceptable and cruel, or as one disability rights activist put it, the pornography of disability.” Why do freaks intrege us? Is it because we feel more normal when we see disabled people? Venus effect is a cutlery set of two spoons and a fork. These objects play with your visual perception. They change the way you see your food, yourself, and your surroundings. This set allows you to share, spy, deform, enlarge, come close, and fall in love.

Venus effect

is us (or rather, the painter paint-ing her picture).Marco Bertamini, Richard Latto, and Alice Spooner confirmed this “Venus effect” by asking twelve observers to describe the picture in their own words. Seventy-five percent said it depicted a woman looking at herself in a mirror. So even though the situation they describe would be physically impossible, it’s by far the most com-mon explanation of what they see.

Most viewers would say this picture depicts a woman view-

ing her own reflection in a mirror. But based on the orientation of the mirror, it’s actually physically impossible for her to see her own reflection. Since we can see her face, then if she could see face in the mirror, her head would have to be positioned between us and the the mirror. At best all she would be able to see

Venus mirror spoon

In the paintings of Venus, she uses a mirror to look at herself. But if you look closer, you see that she isn’t looking at her own reflec-tion but at the painter or the observers.
