Emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety.
Note: Individuals that are listed as unemployable on the LTC Employee Misconduct Registry and have been convicted of a criminal offense listed in Texas Health and Safety Code, 250.006 are not eligible to test.

The roles of various healthcare support positions including the medical office scribe, registration, admitting and receptionist staff and nursing unit computer support positions will be included. Course content will include the transition from paper to electronic records for office practices, clinic setting and acute/long term care facilities. Information on personal health records, clinical documentation, coding and standardization of computer lan-guages, medical terminology basics, evaluation of filing systems and equipment, and maintenance of database records according to information management theory will be covered. Lecture, hands-on computer exercises, and review of industry literature will be instructional methods utilized.

Course Description: This course provides skills and knowledge in the health information field for ICD-9 and CPT coding of insurance forms for reimbursement of medical services. This course emphasizes accurate ICD-9 and CPT coding of office procedures for payment/reimbursement by patient or third party and prevention of insurance fraud. Ideal learning outcomes for the course are to be able to identify different nomenclatures and classification systems and assign codes using appropriate rules, principles, guidelines and conventions. Describe and explain the differences/similarities among insurance plans. Clinical experience will be assigned in area medical offices.

Course Description: The role of the Activity Director in long term health care facilities includes the study of history, regulations, communications, advocacy, ethics, service delivery and volunteer management. This course, when combined with “Long Term Care Activity Directing II” and “Practicum-Gerontology” meets the state requirements to be qualified as an activity director in Texas. Course work and clinical experience is designed to prepare the student for success on the Texas Activity Direction Certification Exam. Selected assignments will be submitted by mail in lieu of class
attendance. Expected learning outcomes are to be able to discuss the history and regulatory requirements for recreation activity services in long term care settings; apply principles of communication, advocacy and ethics to recreation activity service delivery and volunteer management demonstrate knowledge of life span development and demonstrate proper assessment of client needs.

Course Description: Instruction in preparation and administration of designated medications by non-licensed nursing personnel employed in licensed health care agencies including the responsibilities associated with such administration.
Admission Requirements: 1. Nurse Aide on the State Registry 2. Certified copy of high school
diploma or official transcript with date of graduation or notarized copy of GED (certified means with a school seal or notary
signature). 3. $25.00 Money Order made out to:
Texas Dept. of Aging and Disability Services. 4. You must be currently employed
in a facility as a certified nurse aide or licensed direct care staff person on the first day of class.
5. Validation of immunizations including: Hepatitis B Series or serologic confirmation of

Before the class start date, all applicants must be a high school graduate or have passed the general equivalency diploma (GED) test.
Applicants who attended school out of the country must have their documentation verified as being equivalent to high school graduation in the United States. Applicants must be employed as certified Nurse Aides listed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry in active status and currently employed in a facility licensed under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 242 on the class start date OR an ICF-MR facility, state school for the Mentally Retarded for the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice AND have 90 days previous employment in the year preceding the class start date. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE HOME HEALTH AGENCIES, HOSPITALS, SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES (SNF) IN HOSPITALS, STAFFING AGENCIES, OR CITY-COUNTY JAILS.

Course Description: Intensive training in an identified area(s) to meet continuing education and/or review/update requirements associated with professional licensure or certification.
Medication Aides MUST renew their permit annually. This includes taking this 7 hour CE course and paying the $15 fee to the Department of Aging and Disability Services. First year permit holders may renew by paying the DADS fee only. Permits that have lapsed for one year or more CANNOT be renewed. The 7 hour continuing education class should be taken at least three months before your permit expires.

Course Description: Skill development will be administered in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Course includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis will be on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics and medical terminology. Course includes 9 hours of clinical experience that will be assigned in area medical labs.

Focus is given on the range of individuals who may benefit from these activities. Leadership skills, rather than a mastery of the performance skills will be stressed. This course meets the Therapeutic Recreation course requirement for Certified Activity Directors. Selected assignments will be submitted by mail in lieu of class attendance.
Expected learning outcomes are to be able to demonstrate knowledge of the creative process, group dynamics, theories of motivation, and leadership theories, styles and models. The student should be able to write therapeutic goals for and perform activity analysis of creative arts activities and plan and lead creative arts activities appropriate for a wide variety of therapeutic recreation outcomes.

Course Description: This 16-hour course was developed by the American Heart Association and is based on the recommendations of the National Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care. The course is intended for physicians, nurses, paramedical personnel, respiratory therapists and other critical/emergency care professionals who have a need to understand the recommended treatments for critical cardiac patients prior to, during, and post arrest. The cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary for resuscitating the adult are taught through lectures, interactive sessions and skills stations. Participants successfully completing the course requirements will be issued a course completion card.

Course Description: This 16-hour course gives healthcare professionals the knowledge and skills to better recognize and treat critically ill infants and children. The course uses a scenario-based, team approach to teach pediatric emergency management of pediatric patients approaching or already in respiratory or cardiac arrest. Topics include Recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardio-pulmonary arrest, the systematic approach to pediatric assessment, effective respiratory management, defibrillation and synchronized administration, intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration and effective resuscitation team dynamics.
