A Lot On His Mind
When the dust settled after a
tumultuous, sometimes
harrowing week on the landmark
Chaplin lot, the message being
transmitted from an
understandably sullen A&M was,
whatever structure may have
existed in the past, the label is
now being guided firmly by Sr.
VP/GM AI Cafaro. Al is chargedwith leading a radically changed
"House That Herb & Jerry Built"
into the 90s, and that's a huge
task for someone with a face like
his. Yes, it's been a hard week
for Al, but capturing the essenceof the old A&M in the new
PolyGram era could be the
sweetest victory of them all.
On The CoverNice, nice baby. Dallas, Texas'hippest hopper caps atriumphant, chart -toppingdebut with an inappropriatepunishment -a HITS coverappearance bound to causeinstant meltdown.

ROCK THE HALL!!A&M Cuts25 Jobs
In what is being termed a"consolidation" and "staffreduction," A&M has elim-inated 25 jobs.
According to Sr. VP/General Manager Al Cafaro:"In an effort to ready oursel-ves for the competitiverealities of the modem dayrecord business, we made thevery difficult decision toreduce the size of our staff. This has been the next step ina transition that has been on-going for the past six months. It is certainly painful, but weare confident about the ul-timate results."
The label retained the ser-vices of an outplacement ser-vice for displaced employeesand workshops have been of-fered in reentering the jobmarket. In addition, careercounseling has been madeavailable to long-termemployees whose positionswere eliminated.
An A&M spokespersonstressed that the companywill remain a free-standing,full -service label and will notbe integrated into parentcompany PolyGram.
The spokesperson notedthat no further cuts are expec-ted.
Don't Call Him Simple
Paul Simon - The good news Jor him is his album issoaring out of the box. The bad news is he's this week'sfeatured Dialogue on page 34.
Live DeaThat 2 Live Crew pay -per -
view show, scheduled forNovember 8th at the Palacein L. A., is dead. Accordingto Choice Entertainment'sTom Coleman, "Recentdealings with the artists havecast further doubt on theevent's ultimate financialfeasibility." In other words,
they were gonna take a bath.Added Coleman, "Of course,we still support the FirstAmendment and we wishLuther Campbell all the bestin his future artistic and legalendeavors." In other words, this threatened to be the big-gest pay -per -view bombsince female mudwrestling.
You gotta hand it to theRock and Roll Hall of Fameelectorate - they believe invariety.
The very erudite, ex-tremely knowledgable andexpert voters (Ed note: Thenhow did Lenny get a ballot?)gave the nod to such musicalluminaries as LaVern Baker, the Byrds, John Lee Hooker, the Impressions, WilsonPickett, Jimmy Reed and Ike& Tina Turner, making themthe latest inductees into theprestigious institution. (Ed.note: Do I get my ticket to theceremony now?)
The announcement wasmade by Atlantic Records'Ahmet Ertegen, who's alsoChairman of the Hall ofFame Foundation, and musi-cal director Paul Shaffer.
Non -performers Dave Bar-tholomew and Ralph Basswill also be inducted at thesixth annual dinner onJanuary 16, 1991, as will"early influence" Nowlin'Wolf.
Among those on the ballotwho didn't receive the neces-sary votes were JohnnyCash, Bobby "Blue" Bland,Elmore James, Gene Vin-cent, the Yardbirds. theMoonglows, Duane Eddy,Frankie Lyman & theTeenagers and GWAR.

being convinced to visit our Sherman Oaks hellhole. What? No Hits!!HALF HAVE NO SINGLE
LEADING: The dichotomybetween the records Top 40radio is airing and the recordsthe public is buying has neverbeen so clearly illustrated asin today's marketplace. Near-ly half of the nation's Top 50selling albums have no hitrecord leading the sales!!While Top 40 can create amega -seller like SBK'sVanilla Ice, the public is ob-viously using different meansthan just Top 40 airplay tofind their music, making astrong case for the power oflabels' marketing depart-ments, multi -format gameplans and the exploitation ofpress, touring, and video playin the marketing mix.
INSIDE THE TOP TEN:Starting with the #4 seller,Atco's AC/DC, we will take alook at key factors contribut-ing to today's rapidly chang-ing sales environment. CreditAC/DC's success to videoplay, Album Radio play (yes, this band has been aroundlong enough to join the clas-sic mix and get real play),press and word-of-mouth, aswell as night rotation play atmany Top 40s on the elpeecut. Garth Brooks (Capitol)is now the biggest countrysales star (while RandyTravis (WB), Reba McEntire(MCA) and more continue tosell up a storm), but is receiv-
IIIWP"grwr_,..
AC/DC: Huge sales without
ing absolutely no crossoverattention. Paul Simon and IITop, both just out on WB, areboth selling Top Ten, basedon press awareness, trackrecord and video support, butneither has even released asingle to date.
OUTSIDE THE TOP TEN:The Vaughan Bros. (Epic)has been selling extremelywell for a month now, mainlyon track record, video andpress exposure to the StevieRay Vaughan tragedy. Radio(Top 40 and Adult), whichhas adopted a wait -and -seeposture to date, is just nowseriously coming to the party.Heavy metal winners byQueensryche (EMI) andIron Maiden (Epic) lead aslew of headbanging chartsellers without singles ex-posure. On the rap front, TooShort (Jive/RCA), LL Cool J(Columbia) and NWA(Priority) continue to dostrong business without Top40 aid. Add to this the in-credible sales success of thenew Led Zeppelin box set(Atlantic), the kinky stylingsof the Twin Peaks soundtrack(WB) and the traditional folksound of the Indigo Girls(Epic) and you've got anAmerican public looking forfar more diversity than theyare receiving from today'sTop 40 programmers.

Lajeski has been withMCA for the past sevenyears, most recently as VicePresident, Advertising andMerchandising. According tothe label, Lajeski will nowoversee all phases of the ar-tist development process, "ar-ticulating" the long and shortterm needs of artists.
Naturally, we're not surewhat that means, but it madeit past the final approval ofthe press release, and that's
good enough for us.According to Glen, "I'd
like to state unequivocallyand for public record that allmy appliances are made byMatsushita, my car was madein Osaka, I love vegetabletempura..."
(Ed Note: If you were arecently promoted executive, wouldn't you see to it that weDIDN'T receive your officialannouncement? We thoughtso.)

AN EXCLUSIVE HITS INTERVIEW WITH PAUL SIMON BY GARY GRAFF
"It's Brazilian rhythms, WestAfrican guitar stylings." That'show Paul Simon describes "TheRhythm of the Saints," his newalbum and, as the follow-up tothe much -lauded 1986 release"Graceland," the latest entry inhis log of World Beat travels. It's a long way from "Mrs.Robinson" and "The Sounds ofSilence" - this time, Simon'sexplorations take him to SouthAmerica, where he picks up abatch of eerie, haunting beats, over which he lays melodiesthat harken back to some of thematerial on "Graceland," onlyto discover new ground unlikeanywhere he's traveled before. Will it sell, and will it win moreGrammys for the veteran trou-badour and erstwhile partnerof Art Garfunkel? Who cares? It's good music, adventurousand bold, and Simon - who'sstill rhymin' on "Rhythm" -was only too happy to trace hislatest musical journey withHITS' own crazy -after -all -these -years journeyman, Gary Graff.
The switch from the SouthAfrican sound of "Graceland"to the Brazilian orientation of"Rhythm of the Saints" is achange of direction, but thereare various cultural and musicalconnections between the twocontinents, aren't there? That's so. The connection be-tween West African culture,Brazil, the Caribbean and theU.S. is something that started400 years ago with the slavesand the African diaspora. But Igot into it because of some col-laborating I did with MiltonNascimento in the summer of'87. He asked me to sing withhim on an album he was record-ing in L.A., so I went out thereand did the sessions, and after-wards we were just kind ofstanding around in the parkinglot, late at night, and he said,"You have to come to Brazil." I
told him, "I'd like to come down.I'd like to hear some drumming."Why drumming? It was because of a few things. There was something QuincyJones had said to me - that the

great singers come from SouthAfrica, but the great drummerscome from West Africa. Then Iwas working on a musical, andone of the musicians I wasinvolved with was Eddie Pal-mieri. He told me that the drumsFrom West Africa went to Brazil, then into the Caribbean and soforth. He told me the great poly -rhythmic drumming society ofthe world is Cuba. That was hisopinion. So I knew there was thisroute the drum had taken, sowhen Milton said to come downto Brazil, I knew I wanted tohear what traditional drumssounded like there, withBrazilian percussionists.A great deal of their drumminghas a religious connection. That's right. That's why the al-bum's called "The Rhythm of theSaints." Because the slaves wereprohibited to worship in theirown religions, they correlatedtheir deities with Catholic saints.Their masters allowed them toworship as long as they wereworshipping Santa Anna andnot Shango or whoever their
deity may have been. Thosereligions are still active and vitalin Brazil, Puerto Rico and Cuba. How did you decide to combinethe Brazilian rhythms with WestAfrican guitar?Through a friend of musiciansthat Hugh Masekela knew, I wasintroduced to Vincent Nguini, aguitarist from Cameroon whowas living in Washington, D.C.and we began to work together.I'd bring the drum tracks upfrom Brazil, Vincent would listento them and put in his WestAfrican guitar style. Six monthslater, I'd go back down toBrazil and get some more drumtracks. This wasn't my mainproject at the time. I wasworking on a musical. What's that about? It's a Puerto Rican story, a truestory that starts in Puerto Rico intheOs and continues in NewYork in the '50s and '60s. I
won't go into it any further, be-cause I'm a good eight monthsaway from picking it up again. The whole conception of thesongs on "Rhythm of the
Saints" seems different from thenormal way of doing things inpop and rock. It's not a typical singer/song-writer mode of operation, but it'snot an uncommon rock & rollapproach. Many bands cut agroove track, then write a songover it. That's beer going on for

It's really not any harder thanthe other way. It took a little bitof practice to make it feel right, but now I'm more comfortabledoing it that way than sittingdown with a guitar and makingup a song. When -he rhythmtrack is right, I know if I write agood song over it, I'll have adecent record. The other way -if I wrote the song first - youhave to wonder if you're goingto cut a really good track togo with it. It's very frustratingto write a song you like andnot make a good track. success of "Graceland," didyou feel any pressure making"The Rhythm of the Saints"?No. I never feel that pressure. Ididn't feel any intimidation be-cause of "Graceland." Thatrecord made things easier - theBrazilian musicians were eagerto record and everybodythought, "Oh, great, it'll be like

Graceland." I had to hasten totell them, not necessarily. Younever know how it's going toturn out. But everyone hadheard of "Graceland," which
flop, but it's not influencing themusical decisions I'm making.I'm just not going to be makingmusic in the mainstream of popright now. That's not the kind of
music I want to make. I don'treally care to program a drumtrack and sing over it. It's not thatI think those records are bad -but I wouldn't feel comfortablewith it. I did it once with "Carsare Cars," and I didn't like it. It
felt weird to me not to have adrummer back there. So what is it you're after now?Essentially, I'm looking forelements I was familiar with andenjoyed listening to when I wasa kid - the grooves, the guitarsounds. South African guitarsounds like early r&b records tome. These percussion soundsfrom Brazil are like somethingstrange from Louisiana - mybrain goes to Louisiana when Ihear them, and that's becauseLouisiana was influenced bythe Caribbean. You've commented before thisis an album that takes sometime and repeated listenings tofully appreciate.Well, when people first heard"Graceland," they thought it wasodd, too. When I was firstmaking this record and playingit for people, they liked it, butthey weren't really sure. There'soften a resistance to somethingthat's new, that feels strange. Then it seeps in and you love it.
I would hope people would beattracted to "The Rhythm of theSaints" on the first listen. I
wouldn't expect you to get it thatquickly, but it's not like I intendedit to be a challenge or anobstacle for people. I hope it's in-tellectually stimulating withoutbeing essentially Americanrhythms. I anticipate that thisrecord will do better around theworld. I'm hoping it's got enoughon the first listen so that peoplelike it, but when you go back, you get it even more.Part of the difference is thatthere's a different type of dynam-ic at work here, even differentfrom the stuff on "Graceland."It's different than a trap drum set, that's true. It definitely had an ef-fect on the way I wrote. There's ahypnotic quality to this kind ofdrumming that made the songsmore dreamlike and less linear, musically and lyrically. That was
coming, anyway. That was hap-pening on "Graceland." I triedto make this album a reallysouthern hemisphere record. It'sless urban. It's got more naturein it. You can feel the heat, thedrums, the wood and the skin, that acoustic of sound. In the lyrics, there's much moreplaying with the languagerather than presenting directthoughts, which can makethings intriguing, but alsodifficult to grasp.I'm always talking about some-thing. If we're talking about areasonably intelligent personwho listens to the song and says,"I don't know what he's talkingabout," then I haven't done myjob. That's not what I intended. But there should be enoughpleasure to be gotten from themusic - the rhythm of thedrums or the sound of the words- even if the meaning isn't per-fectly clear. You're planning to tour forthis album.I am. I'm going to go out with abig band, about 17 musicians. There will be four percussionistsfrom Brazil, Vincent Nguini, some musicians from the"Graceland" tour, and someAmerican musicians, likeRichard Tee and Steve Gadd. The material will be the wholespectrum - from Simon & Gar-funkel up to 'The Rhythm ofthe Saints."Do the new methods of work-ing you've adopted on "Grace -land" and "The Rhythm ofthe Saints" change the wayyou look at or perform theolder songs?Sometimes you can find a dif-ferent way to do them thatmakes them feel right. There area great many songs I haven'tdone in a long time, so I'll see. Ienjoyed singing "Still Crazy Af-ter All These Years," on the 15thanniversary of "Saturday NightLive." Mostly, I try not to be judg-mental about the stuff in thepast, which I can't changeanyway. I'm a critical person, and I'd rather be a little forgiv-ing about stuff I did when Iwas young.

Why Am I At This Convention?
POST TOASTED By lvanaB. Adored
SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM: One quick glance at the chartand you'll know what impact the CMJ Confab had on youreporters: you repored the same list as the previois week! This chart is so stagnant it makes my head hurt! The onlydrama on this week'; PoMo chart is the upward moie by theCharlatans UK (this record is really selling), the mode by thePosies, and a strong debut by the Hindu Love Gods. Thrill-ing, right? My b indingly handsome compadre, Nick Bulland I thoroughly enjoyedthe quality time we spentwith you, our esteemedreporters. Placing a face toa lame was hopefully asen ightening for me as itwas for you. After tenCMJ conventions, youwculd think I couldremember why I alwaysinsist that this year will bemy last As the self ap-pointed arbiter ,3f all that isPo Vlo, here's Ivana's high-lights of the :onveation:the opening keynotespeech by that other Ober-lin alum, Eric Bogcsian, the Posies/Yo La Ten-go/Goo Goo Dolls/Buckpets show at CBGB's, the Fluid atthe Pyramid, the Posies, Randy Bullock from WXYC, theRed, Hot + Blue pary at Wetlands, the folks from WHTG,Pan Grannan (WXCI's loss is Atlantic's gain), the Posies,An Emotional Fish/Lemonheads/Redd Kross show at theRitz, Dave Gottlieb's tongue, my unrequi:ed crush on TimHyde, NOT seeing Leshay, the Posies, Sean Rener's port-able phone (I wonder if he got the bill for those calls to Scot-land and Australia?), the Posies, the Kiev and wresting cabsaway from polite convention goers (heh, heh) The panelswere suprisingly interesting and well organized, particularlythe "Tips and Trades" panel. (Maybe if I suck up to DawnHood she'll semi me to a Jellyfish show)....You know, I wasamazed at how brilliant the Goo Goo Dolls were live Hey, Ialready love the album, especially "Laughing," but this trio"liv 2." was unbelievable! Same goes for Mudhoney, guess,if I could have gotter. into the show Look for upcomingpho:os of the CMJ Artist Panel to feature Robyn Hitchcockproudly and prominently holding a copy of HITS. Framedcopies will be available for a nominal fee Congrats hp Maryat KFMH on her pending "on air" nuptials. How persoial andromantic. Will record companies do "time buys" for this bles-sed event? Are Redd Kross just too smart for you to get? Ican't believe that this -ecord hasn't catapulted these geniusesto fame and fortune. See them on tour with the Posies Ijust want to thank you 'or letting me be myself again.

But, with the SXSW Convention in Austin only five monthsaway, you can be sure we'll be giving lots of ink to our very closefriend. Hey Jody, GREAT HAIR! GREAT PLAYLIST!

POMO PICKSEdited by Karen Glauber
Pylon, "Chain" (Sky): After a series ofshowcase gigs, Pylon pleased manyfans distressed at their untimely demiseby recording their first album in almosteight years. Longtime a fixture on theAthens, GA. scene, Pylon's quirkyrhythm based songs were criticallyregarded as innovative, with Vanessa
Briscoe Hay's vocals soaring above the groove. The new albumserves as a testimony to Pylon's influence on many a band andwith "Sugarpop," produced by Scott Litt, they will hopefullyget the recognition and success they've long deserved.
77_
PYLONCHAIN
Sisters of Mercy, "Vision Thing"(Elektra): Does anybody besides methink it's hysterical that Jim Steinmanproduced the lead track, "More," fromthe Sister's latest? Since the other Sister.Patricia Morrison left the band, couldthat be Karla Devito on backing vocals?"Vision Thing" is a calculated attemptat mining the ground broken by the Cult, etc. but tc AndrewEldritch's credit, the Sisters of Mercy launched the HITS PoMosection, and you can expect "Vision Thing" to launch the bandinto the nether reaches of fame and fortune.
I I IL SIS I EliS OF MLIIC'r : VISION THIN
Soho, "Goddess" (Atco): 'There wasno way of escaping Soho's PoMo cros-sover smash "Hippychick." Regardlessof where you were, the opening riff, borrowed from the Smith's "How SoonIs Now" was everywhere. For thosewho relegated Soho to the schcol of onehit wonders, guess again. Fronted by
Jacqueline and Pauline, twin sisters from the UK, this is themost intelligent, anti -racist, anti -sexist and enjoyable dance/poprecord since Neneh Cherry's debut. "Freaky" is a great place tostart, but there are a zillion other treats to be found.
Various Artists, "Red, Hot + Blue"(Chrysalis): The selection of Cole Por-ter songs recorded for this albumreflects the elegance and poignancy ofthe human condition; a dignity thatcan't be taken away, regardless ofAIDS. Some of the best loved PoMo ar-tists have contributed to this 20 track - 120', - -Chrysalis album, who will donate all of the proceeds to AIDScharities. Particularly unforgettable is U2's "Night And Day,"Annie Lennox' "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, and k.i. Lang's"So In Love." Cole Porter would be proud that his songs canmake such an impact.

DEVILS WIELDING SCIMITARS: The TV News offers "Hciloween ad-vice to parents who think their children might be worshipping the devr." But alaswe don't have to worry about that with Jeff and Steve McDcnalc five,Redd Kross. who have yet to stop worshipping the beauty mark 9n &ISMCOWSill's knee. MY BOYFRIEND'S IN THIS PICTURE: Yeah, I wish. A crucify, it'sHITS personality Heather Lose hanging with the two very sadly Bros.Figaro. ELVIS IS DEAD: But unfortunately, that doesn't address the problem o; writ-ing something profound and profane about this group of mega dweets. RCA's Newest Sensation Making Waves
HI -FIVE'S ALIVE!!!Does the world need a
raunchy tale of a sixteenyear -old boy being seducedby a sly twenty-five year oldfemale?
Of Course they do. Andthey need it bad enough tomake it go zoomin' up thecharts.
"I Just Can't Handle It,"the debut single by the WacoTexas/Oklahoma City quintetHi -Five, is boomin' out of thebox. They are even makingRCA's illustrious VP SkipMiller jump like he hasn'tsince the days he workedwith the Jackson 5.
Radio can't get enough ofrisque, attitude drenchedtracks like this. Especiallywhen they are produced bythe ultra -hot hands of TeddyRiley, who is on fire again.
The record is kickin' it onWBLS, WGCI, WAMO,WBLK, KHYS, KPRS, andWXOK, where sultry MDRenee Luv purred seduc-tively into super stud DarrylLindsey's ears and told him"it keeps the radio hoppin'."Darryl was last seen runnin'for a cold shower.
Retail is gettin' in on theact, rackin' up impressivenumbers on this youth -oriented track. Dontay Gib-son of Downtown Records inNew Jack City says Riley is"turnin' bubblegum into amore mature sound."

The battle of Arbitron vs. Birch will probablycontinue forever. However, Birch seems to bekinder to Black Radio. In the recentAugust/September survey of the top 10 radiomarkets, Urban radio was #1 in five and #2 inthree. NOT BAD! While I'm not suggesting thatall you programmers run out and buy brand newPorsches, a glass of champagne is definitely in or-der. (Ed. note: Our research goddess Kandacejust l000ves champagne.) The big news in thesurvey comes from L.A., where KKBT's MikeStradford, Liz Kiley, Frank Miniaci, and theircrew soar from 5.9 to 6.5 in the July/Augustmonthlies! The Beat is the toast of La La Land, which is amazing when you consider that the sta-tion is still building, but has had such an amazing

impact on a wide cross-section of listeners. Manyindustry observers feel that they're playing itTOO SAFE. That remains to be seen. The proofshould come when their competitors make theirprogramming adjustments in the coming weeks.KJLH (1.3 - 1.5) is in a regrouping mode, restruc-turing their air staff and their music mix, whichwill feature more Rap than before, perhaps to at-tract K DAY's listeners now that it is going down.KACE (.6 - .7) and KGFJ (.9 -1.4) are going forthe adults, but all three are at a serious power dis-advantage when compared to KKBT. This putsthem at a serious disadvantage, but you've got tothink that Stradford & Co. are gunning for largerfish (KIIS & KPWR). We wish them all the luck inthe world. Later.

SOFT & WARMSTORM WATCH: Like an aged wine (orthe amount of days JAMS god GrahamArmstrong has been without a shower),Joe Sample just gets better with time. From his days with the Jazz Crusaders tothe present, this extraordinary player hasdazzled fans with his ability to tickle the
eighty eights. Sample's latest effort, "Ashes To Ashes"(WB), is an incredible work that leaves us spellbound. Theentire record is fabulous, but we highly recommend "TheRoad Less Traveled," "I'll Love You," the Marcus Miller -penned "Strike Two," and the title track. Share this specialalbum with your listeners. Let them know you really care.We do. We're HITS. But don't take our word for it (wouldyou anyway?). Give it a listen. For once, we just might beright (ed Note: Yeah, sure). More next week.

JACK WESTONRCA RECORDSIt takes a lot of juice to control exploding artists like Clint Black and K.T. Oslin, while nuturingdeveloping careers like Matraca Berg and Aaron Tippin. There a few who could follow Galante, butone man stands proud and alone - ladies and gentlemen, RCA's man, myth, living legend, all-around nice guy and former Promo Domo Jack Weston. With tat upcoming Roy Rogers tribute al-bum in the works, maybe he can get you close to Trigger.

NEOBILLY PICKSby Ho ly Gleason, Nashville
K.T Oslin, "Love In A Small Town"(RCA): "Come Next Monday" and"Cornell Crawford" are obviouscountry hits, while "Mary and Willie"is the state of the day-to-day "'80sLadies" sequel about love oneveryone's own terms fans havewaited for. Still, the songs that show
Oslin's depth as a wnter are the reflective "New War' Home"and "Still On My Mind," dealing with loves that are gone, butrefuse to die. Sung with deep knowing, Oslin's insipt servesas a comfort to us all.
Traveling Wilburys, "Traveling Wil-burys, Vol. 3" (Wilbury/Warner):With the Kentucky Headhuntersplying their roughshod country -rock,there's plenty of room for Muddy,Boo, Clayton and Spike here in Hol-lyville. They play deep -pocketedgrooves loose and greazy, sing likethey mean it and have the kinda good t. mes most never find.Check out the gently chuggling "Inside Out" or the obvious"Hillbilly Rock"- sequel, "Wilbury Twist." Any Df thesetracks should appeal to Neobillies everywhere.
t.44'44,1111Y1Wild Rose, "Straight and Marrow"(Capitol): Producer James Stroudunderstands bands, consequently gen-der's not an issue listening to the fivewomen of Wild Rose. Steamy groovesand rock -solid playing are the rule ontheir second LP. The lazy harmoniesthat hang above "Forever Ir. Love,"
the painfully pretty "Right Between The Lies" and the per-colating "Straight and Narrow" sounds like hits, as the hyper -speed "Hit The Highway" shows multi -instrumental WandaVick to be a picker's picker.
Reba McEntire, "Rumor Has It"(MCA): Reba McEntire's vocal chopsare legend. She can twist, twirl andcurl notes with an ease that's earnedher acclaim far beyond Nashville, andwith "Rumor Has It," McEntire's craft-ed a work that will touch the masses."You Lie" is a soaring tour -de -forcethat knows no format, ditto for the love -too -late "Now YouTell Me" and the slightly dark "This Picture," while JesseWinchester's "You Remember Me" shows artistic under-statement.
NE0-MUGS
ONE WEARS A HAT, THE OTHER DOESN'T: RCA labelmatesClint Black (I) and Matraca Berg (r) look l'ik2 c cute couple, butthey it sist the only reason they're together for this pinto cpportunity is topromote their upcoming albums - the former's 'yin Yourself In MyShoes" and the larter's "Lying To the Moon." Yech right, and HITS'Neobidy Goddess Holly Gleason is painfully shy arra dsmure.
RALPHING IN HOLLYVILLE: Ralph Emery tc), host of The Nash-ville Network's "Nashville Now" show, demonstrates the popular "safe sex"air-kis: has reached Music City as he puckers up for iSkrcury Records artistDaniele Alexander (I) while labelmate Butch Baker (r) decideswhether it's appropriate to squash the caterpillar which Jun c-awled into Ral-phie's ear. Alexander presented Ralph with the glass music box and the bottle of
Binacafeatured in her hit single/video, "It Wasn't You, It WGSK't Me," from theforthcoming LP, "I Dream In Color."
PAYING DIFFIE-DENDS: Epic Records Joe Dift ie admires the human"ass" -as of his record label while wondering where ne can get one of thosegroovy satin baseball jackets everyone else but he is wec.rirg. When he heardthe cal of one was recoupable against royalties from his new album, "AThousand Winding lbods" and its hit single, "Home," the iveobilly croonerdecider to stick to the complimentary mineral water and land -rowel instead.
