UTEP ATHLETIC FEE INITIATIVE Brief history of the company Mission Statement and Goals Who and what is the campus life and
athletic enhancement initiative Problem the company faces and
communication error SWOT analysis Recommendations and Conclusion
BRIEF HISTORY ON THE
COMPANY:•Opened on September 23, 1914 with only 27 students
•State School of Mines and Metallurgy near present day Fort Bliss
•1919 U.T. Department of Mines and Metallurgy
•1920 Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (TCM) •1949 Texas Western College •1967 University of Texas at El Paso when the University of Texas System renamed all schools under its umbrella
THE COMPANY’S STATED VISION, MISSION, AND GOALS:
“The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is dedicated to teaching and to the creation, interpretation, application, and dissemination of knowledge.” (Undergraduate Catalog)
“The Office of Athletic Development collaborates with all other offices within the Athletic Department in continuously promoting, supporting, and celebrating UTEP Athletics and the quality young men and women who are proud to wear the Orange and Blue.” (http://utepathletics.cstv.com/sports/MAC/spec-rel/mission-statement.html)
WHO AND WHAT IS THE CAMPUS LIFE AND ATHLETIC ENHANCEMENT INITIATIVE:
Initiative aimed at increasing student fees More money for to the athletic department and
student organizations Needs student and state legislature approval Fall 2011 $10 fee Fall 2012 $2 increase Fall 2013 $2 increase On the SGA website there is a YouTube video as well
as a link to the actual text of the initiative
THE PROBLEM THE COMPANY FACES:
Much confusion among the students
University lacks communication when informing students of such proposals
The UTEP Athletics Department has not specified how the fee will be used
Students believe that the proposed fee would only benefit the Athletic Department
THE COMMUNICATION ERRORS THAT ARE OBVIOUS:
1. Confusion among students due to lack of communication by the University
2. Postponement of voting on the referendum due to the absence of an election commission
3. Lack of persuasion by the UTEP Athletic Department to support the initiative
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
Currently UTEP has sixteen sports that compete in Conference USA at the Division IA level of the NCAA
Most noticeable weakness to this
initiative is lack of communication towards students
OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS:
UTEP is ready to take the next step towards becoming a Tier I institution
Initiative will provide additional money of up to one million dollars for Student Life Enhancement and activities
UTEP students feeling that they have not been taken into consideration poses threat towards initiative
Failure would result in loss of monies for UTEP athletic department and the various student organizations
PRESENT SOLUTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
Recommendation 1: Mass e-mail to all students and faculty prior to the
voting period allowing students the opportunity to reply to the e-mail with any questions
Recommendation 2: Text messages to students who have registered a
cell phone number with the University with the links to the websites the university has in place
Recommendation 3: Pop up message with information regarding the
initiative that students would read upon signing into my.utep.edu login
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION: By providing this information our group
intends to inform UTEP’s students what the Student Life and Athletic Enhancement Initiative is.
By implementing the solution provided by our group, UTEP’s chances of notifying nearly all students will increase thus ensuring the necessary votes to either pass or decline this initiative.
Let’s get out there and vote.
