UpRising Alumni Conference 2016
Participant Joining Instructions This one day event will inspire you to change your world. Come and learn from the best,
hear from the inspiring, and develop your UpRising networks for life!
The UpRising Alumni Conference has three aims:
1. create a space in with hundreds of UpRisers can meet, reconnect and work together
to create social change.
2. allow UpRisers the opportunity to access inspirational speakers and attend dynamic
workshops.
3. encourage alumni to unlock their potential, learn from each other and take the next
steps on their leadership journey.
Below you will find important information to help you get the most out of the day. A
conference agenda has been included for your information, along with a map of the area,
and workshop information.
The agenda
Arrival at the Conference
Participant registration for the conference will take place from 10:00 - 10:45 at the regis-
tration desk. Key notes and main sessions will take place in the main auditorium and
workshops will be taking place in a variety of different rooms. Ushers will be available
throughout the day to assist in finding sessions. Coffee breaks and lunch will be served in
the main foyer and reception area..
If you are arriving from: Cardiff
Provided transportation will be leaving from Cardiff Central Station at 7:40am. If you
did not receive transportation through UpRising but would like to travel with the group
please meet in front of the station at 7:25 am.
London Provided transportation will be leaving from Euston Station at 8:43am. If you did not
receive transportation through UpRising but would like to travel with the group please meet in front of the station by the picnic tables at 8:20 am.
Liverpool Provided transportation will be leaving from Liverpool Lime Station at 8:04am. If you
did not receive transportation through UpRising but would like to travel with the group please meet in front of the station at 7:45 am.
Luton Provided transportation will be leaving from Milton Keynes Station at 9:13am. If you
did not receive transportation through UpRising but would like to travel with the group please meet in front of the station at 8:50 am.
Manchester Provided transportation will be leaving from Manchester Piccadilly at 8:27am. If you
did not receive transportation through UpRising but would like to travel with the group please meet in front of the station at 8:10 am.
Stoke Provided transportation will be leaving from Stoke Train Station at 9:07am. If you did
not receive transportation through UpRising but would like to travel with the group please meet in front of the station at 8:45 am.

By Train
Within a ten minute walk from all major train stations, the Matthew Boulton Campus is
well located in the centre of Birmingham.
By Bus
Services 14, 55, 56, 66, and 94 all stop directly outside the Matthew Boulton Campus.
By Car
The Matthew Boulton Campus is located in the centre of Birmingham. Car parking is
available on site and the postcode is B4 7PS if you are using Satellite Navigation.

The Refuge Project is a community integration project based in Manchester. The aim of the project is to promote the integration of refugees in to their communities by sourcing and facilitating volunteering opportunities for refugees.

#ITOOAMHUMAN aim to humanise those who have been dehumanised. They humanise refugees to prove they are more than statistics. With a cam-era and a simple message, they capture the true stories behind the number.

Jess Phillips, MP has committed her life to improving the lives of others, especially the most vulnerable, but how has this ethos impacted her leadership journey and the choices that she made throughout her career? Jess shares with us some key lessons that she’s learnt along the way.

1 Citizen Journalism
Yasir Mirza is the former Head of Diversity and Inclusion at the Guardian. He has devised and run citizen reporting and journalism training programmes with marginalised communities across the world. In this exclusive workshop he will cover topics including the news lifecycle, the difference between news, opinion and feature stories, and digital and citizen journalism.
2 Compassion in
Leadership
In this interactive session, Michael will look at some of the specific challenges for expert leaders around emotional intelligence. He will examine some of the critical components for developing engagement in organisations. Michael will then go on to examine compassion at the individual and organisational levels, sharing research from Roffey Park on what leaders and organisations need to do to deepen their compassion in service of better workplaces and better results.
3 Communications
for Leaders
This session will offer an introduction to the key elements of strategic communications. It is designed to allow participants to apply their new knowledge in the workplace, be it in the public, private or voluntary sectors. Strategic communications goes beyond public relations, mar-keting, and campaigns. It’s actually about what happens in our ‘hearts and minds’, what happens across our society’s diverse groups, in power circles, and in many other spheres.
4 Global Leadership Abhas, an electrical engineer by training, is a seasoned strategy con-sultant and a passionate social entrepreneur. He was selected as a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum and together with his fellow Global Shaper, Rocco Falconer will be delivering a master class on what it means to be a Global Leader and how to leverage networks and platforms through real life examples.

Join us for this inspiring panel which showcases 4 powerful leader-ship stories from a range of women across a variety of sectors. Our 4 panellists include: Shabana Mahmood - MP for Birmingham La-dywood, Dorothy Wilson MBE - Chief Executive and Artistic Director,

6 Environmental
Leadership
This workshop brings together activists and experts to equip you with a better understanding of how to take action from the global to the local level. Speakers include Chris Crean, Friends of the Earth, Lotifa Begum, Uprising Alumni and Global Campaigns Coordinator at Islam-ic Relief Worldwide, Daniel Price founder of Pole to Paris and Emma Howard, Greenpeace and UpRising Alumni.
7 Mindfulness and
Successful Leader-
ship
Saeed is the Director and Chief Health Consultant at SO Health. Dur-ing this workshop, Saeed promises that “we will stare into space, challenge ourselves to listen to our selves, be our own motivational coach, dare to laugh, and move more whilst learning how to be stronger in healthiness, mindfulness and resilience as we continue our development in leadership, our growth and evolutionary journey to our complete self. I look forward to meeting you all”.
8 Running an Effec-
tive Campaign
Ali Tamlit was one of the ‘Heathrow 13’, a group of activists from Plane Stupid who occupied a runway at Heathrow in 2015 in order to raise awareness and protest the continued building of runways at Heathrow. Join Ali’s workshop where you will learn first hand how to run a success-ful campaign both on and offline from someone who’s been there and bought the T-Shirt too!
