-Judiazers are infiltrating Antioch. P & B dispute them.-P & B are sent to Apostles in Jerusalem for official

ruling on what to require of Gentile Christians.

THE COUNCIL-Grace opponents believed Gentiles must be

circumcised and required to obey the law. -Peter explains that God knows their hearts and has sent His Holy Spirit. (They are already Christians)

-Key verse 15:11-Paul & Barnabas share about their mission-James speaks with final authority.

Paul’s StoryACTS CHAPTER 15

15:19-21 Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. For from ancient generations Moses has had in in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in thee synagogues.

Why even these rules? Sensitivity to Jewish brothers.

Paul’s StoryACTS CHAPTER 15

15:22 Then it seemed good to the Apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas.

Paul, Barnabas, Judas-Barsabbas, and Silas.

The Gentile response was very positive.

Missionary dream team breaks up over John Marks involvement.

Barnabas and John Mark head to Cyprus. Paul & Silas to Syria.

Paul’s Second Missionary Journey

ACTS CHAPTER 16

Paul ends up in Asia Minor/Turkey/Galatia in the town of Derbe. Here he picks up a half Jew, half Greek disciple named Timothy.

Churches are strengthened, people are coming to Jesus!

Paul wants to take the Gospel to Asia but the Spirit of Jesus stops him. He receives a vision from a man in Macedonia (Greece) pleading with him to take his mission there.

First stop in Greece is Philippi.

ACTS CHAPTER 16

Place of prayer at the river. What does this mean?

Lydia trusts in Jesus and was baptized, persuades the missionaries to stay with her.

Story of the slave girl and her masters. -She has ability to tell the future by the power of evil spirit. -Her owners make money off of her. -She is telling the truth about Paul’s message but annoyingly. -Paul casts the evil spirit out of her. -She is useless to her owners.

ACTS CHAPTER 16

Slave owners take revenge. Paul & Silas end up flogged and imprisoned.

Paul & Silas are singing praises to God at midnight. God sends a large earthquake to shake the doors open, but supernaturally unlocked everyone’s chains too.

But not to escape?

Prison guard discovers empty prison and is going to kill himself. Paul reveals that all the prisoners are just outside.

ACTS CHAPTER 16

Prison Guard- “How can I be saved?”Paul- “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.”

He cleans the missionaries wounds and then he and his family are baptized.

City leaders send word that Paul & Silas are to be released.

Paul, a Roman citizen wants justice. Public exoneration.

City leaders- “Please leave town.”

ACTS CHAPTER 17

Paul & Silas won over some Jews & Greeks in Thessalonica.-Philippian church financially supported him (Phil 4:15-16)-Jason gave him a place to stay.

Angry mob comes for missionaries at Jason’s house but they are not home. They take Jason and his family instead!

They lie about, imprison, and make Jason post bond.

Missionaries head to Berea. Special group of believers here. EXAMINE EVERYTHING WITH SCRIPTURE TO SEE IF IT’S TRUE.

ACTS CHAPTER 17

Mob from Thessalonica travelled to Berea to turn the people against Paul personally.

Paul is sent to Athens. Silas & Timothy stay in Berea.

Athens- Known worldwide for its intellectualism.

Paul engages with two schools of philosophy.-Epicureans-Stoics

Do they still exist?

ACTS CHAPTER 17

Philosophers bring Paul to Mars Hill (Hill of Ares) the meeting place of the council of Areopagus (religion & education).

They ask Paul to present his “new philosophy”

Paul introduces the unknown god = YahwehHe is unlike other gods.

He needs nothing, gives everything.V.27- God’s Sovereignty.V.28- Greek poets quotedFoolish to worship idolsResurrection of Jesus gives PROOF!

3 Athenian responses…-Mock-Curious-Believe

No church started in Athens.

ACTS CHAPTER 18

Paul heads to Corinth. Meets Aquilla & Priscilla (tentmakers).

ACTS CHAPTER 18

Silas and Timothy catch up with Paul in Corinth.

Jewish response to the Gospel was negative. Paul switches focus on only Gentiles there.

Synagogue ruler Crispus and his whole family trust in Jesus and are saved along with a large population of Greeks. This is the new church.

The Lord assured Paul he would keep him safe in Corinth so he remains there for a year and a half.

Many possibilities. No conclusive evidence. Whatever it is it is holding Satan’s wrath back and the revealing of the Anti-Christ. So whatever it is it’s a good thing.
