Humor in Memory Care: Why Laughter Is Good Medicine for Your Loved One and You. There is certainly nothing funny about a loved one who is living with Alzhei-mer’s disease or another form of dementia. However, experts in memory care tell us that humor actually plays a legitimate and useful role in the caregiving process. For example, with the common symptom of agitation, laughter seems to provide a calming effect, which reduces your loved one’s stress levels and subsequent agitation and aggressive behaviors. Despite the unhappy circumstances that accompany a loved one with memory loss, it is important to keep in mind that it is OK to laugh. Not only is laughter acceptable, it is considered beneficial to your loved one and strongly encouraged by experts. Therefore, look for a variety of ways to help your loved one to laugh. Playful kidding, visual humor, joke books, DVD’s of old comedy favorites such as The Carol Burnette show or any-thing else that creates laughter is good for both of you! Michael Adkins

Otis Dykes, RSD RN/BSN THE STAGES OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE The Stages of Alzheimer’s disease are separated into three different categories. Mild Alzheimer’s disease Not to be confused with younger onset Alzheimer’s or early onset Alzheimer’s, mild Alzheimer’s disease is char-acterized by some memory loss, especially memory of more recent events. A person in the early stages of Alzhei-mer’s will likely be able to carry out the daily activities of living, but may begin to forget familiar words and names when speaking, and have trouble finding things like keys. Judgment and at-tention span will become im-paired. Moderate Alzheimer’s dis-ease The symptoms of moderate Alzheimer’s disease are in large part an increase in the severity of the symptoms of the first stage. Professional and social functioning con-tinue to deteriorate because of increasing problems with memory, logic, speech, and initiative Severe Alzheimer’s Disease Severe Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by almost total memory loss. The per-son in this last stage of Alz-heimer’s usually needs help with all of the basic activities of daily living. She will lose the ability to walk unassist-ed, and, in time, even to sit up by herself. The body eventually forgets how to carry out the normal biologi-cal functions necessary to sustain life.
Exercise is an essential part of daily life .Exercise sup-ports strength, mobility, stamina and overall good health . Daily exercise helps to lower blood pressure helps with blood sugar con-trol and weight control. Chair aerobics, volleyball, ball toss, Zumba , dance and Tai Chi are part of our daily exercise program . Every Tuesday you can join us at 2:00 p.m. to relax and enjoy our Tai chi class with Vicki Elliot.
