PROJECT BACKGROUND• The human population in Nairobi county is increasing

at a very fast pace.• This is leading to a strain of the available

infrastructure e.g. water and transport• The traffic congestion on many roads within the

county is a clear indication of lack of an efficient transport system.

• The government needs to put measures in place to reduce the traffic jams.

• Use of Geospatial technology will provide a solution for this.

PROBLEM STATEMENT• The current commuter train operates on a rail line

that was set up mainly for ferrying cargo.• This implies that the commuter train services are

not effectively and efficiently delivered to the Nairobi County dwellers.

• The need to assess the suitability of the current commuter railway network is the basis of this project.

OBJECTIVES

General ObjectiveTo design a Geodatabase of the current commuterrailway line and railway stations, that will assist in the storage and maintenance of data and information

5joewachiye@gmail.com

Specific Objectives

•To map all the existing railway stations within the area of study•To map the existing commuter railway line within the study area•To propose railway lines to suitable locations

6

METHODOLOGY

7

ANALYSIS• The railway stations were buffered with a 5km buffer

distance, their Euclidean distance calculated, then reclassified.

• The railway line was also buffered with a 5km buffer distance, its Euclidean distance calculated and then reclassified.

• DTM was used to generate the slope map for the study area. The slope map was then reclassified.

• Land use data set was converted to raster format then reclassified.

• Population was also converted to raster then reclassified

ANALYSIS Contd’• All the reclassified data sets had 6 uniform classes and

were weighted. The result was a suitability map Reclassified Data sets Percent influence(%) Ratio of influence

New railway line

• A new railway line could not be set up since the ground is already covered with buildings.

• It is un economical to the government and the republic in general to demolish the buildings in order to set up a new railway line

• MRTs running on the road reserves is the solution.

PROPOSED MRTs CORRIDORS

21joewachiye@gmail.com

CONCLUSION

• A suitable railway line could not be set up due to human developments in the region.

• The study area is small, which implies that it can only support a radial pattern of a new commuter railway. Feeder roads to stations then need to be improved.

• The MRTs proposal was in line with the Nairobi Urban Master plan 2013, as prepared by JICA.

22joewachiye@gmail.com

RECOMMENDATIONS

• The government needs to improve the current commuter train, in terms of speed and capacity.

• A new standard gauge railway t be set up besides the current one.

• Set up the proposed MRTs corridors.• Extend the current commuter services to satellite

counties e.g Thika, Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado, since they will attract more people in an effort to decongest the county.

• Further research.
